I smoked a batch of salmon yesterday. Today I set out to deliver some smoked filets to a couple of friends. When I got to my close friend Gary's house he didn't answer the door. So I went over to his ranch shop, and found him dead from a self-inflicted gunshot. I am just numb.

It appears that this happened yesterday evening.

What the hell. Gary was a friend to ride the river with.

Okay, I’m going to try.

My 29 year old nephew shot himself two years ago. I spent a lot of time thinking “what if I had…”

I finally arrived at the conclusion that nephew’s decision was his alone, and probably had nothing to do with anything I did or didn’t do. I think some people get into a really dark place and can’t see any other way out of it.

I'm so sorry to hear this, Jeff. I lost a close friend the same way. I really do think I know what your mind is going thru right now...:(

Sorry to hear of your loss, Wolfsong old friend. May God be with you and his family at this time. :(

What a shock to you. And, of course there will be the self search of "What if I'd done........."

Knowing you, there is nothing you could have done differently. Resign yourself to this fact.

Pray for his family members who will be numb for awhile. Know that, "this too, shall pass."

I am sorry to hear of this tragedy. My best friend had that experience twice where he discovered a friend that committed suicide. One with a single sentence note and one without a note. It left him pretty shaken both times. I will pray for you and your friend.

Wolfson, our thoughts and prayers are with you. Sometimes there is nothing you can do and if it wasn't a bullet it would have been another way. No matter how well you think you know someone there is a chance that they have something going on in their life that is too much for them to handle. Remember the good things about your friend Gary and do something positive in his honor. Guilt in a case like this is a useless emotion. 15 years ago I lost my only child to a texting driver after a 10 month coma. It was as wrong as it gets but I have turned it into good because I help kids into the skilled trades in his honor. You will see Gary when you reach the other side in the presence of our Creator just as I will see my son

When I saw the title of the thread,, I wondered,,,! Then I read it,, and I too said; "Damn,, just Damn."

It's hard to understand such things,, yet,, Bob is right.

My thoughts, prayers & heart go out to you & Gary's family.
