Dad's old Security Six...

OK... Here's a story with a purpose.

I remember as a young boy, about 11 give or take, riding in dad's car and finding a pistol. My dad worked offshore, in th Gulf of Mexico, as an oilfield mud engineer for many years. Living in W. OK and working out of ports like Port Fourchon. While riding in the back seat, I saw a leatherette pouch halfway underneath the passenger seat. I opened it up and and found a revolver. I asked why he had a gun, and he replied, "Protection". A few years later, I found out it was a Ruger 4" blued Security Six .357 Mag. I have shot a couple of stainless Service Sixes that were OHP standard issue until the early 2000's. I have been in love with these guns after only a couple of short range trips. Dad still has the gun, and I'm ready to ask for it.

That's when I fell in love with these guns. If anybody else has a good story, I'll listen.

My Security-Six story always makes me smile.
Many years ago,, I just had to have a Security-Six,, and was going to accompany a friend of mine to a place called "Police Supply" in Charlotte. He was looking for a good 357 to use as a b/u gun & occasional duty carry gun. (He was set on a S&W.)
Another friend was kinda wanting a Ruger as well, and sent with me a couple of hundred in case we got a good deal. While my friend was fondling the S&W model 28 he was buying,, I asked for them to bring out a couple of Ruger Security-Six stainless guns. When the 2 hit the counter,,, I noticed the serial numbers were only 4 digits apart. I asked if they had any "in line" with each other. He brought back 3 pairs of consecutive numbers Securities. I nearly fell over. I did not have enough $$ to buy more than one for myself,, and the one for my friend,, (dern it,) so I studied them,, and selected a set. When we got home,, I called my buddy & told him I had a gun,, for him,, WITH A CONDITION,,,, if he got it,, I was to have first dibs on purchasing it if he ever sold it,, & I would give him the same courtesy for mine. If he couldn't agree to that,, then I was gonna give him his $$ back & keep the pair. He agreed,, and we both still own our own respective Security-Six. That was well over 25 years ago,,!

Well I found the 2 S-Six's I have through a ad down at the range. I went to the fellows house and bought them both.

They had been in a box in his garage and he forgot he had them for about 25yrs. He was a retired Police Instructor from up state NY. They were in sad looking condition and hadn't been cleaned from the last time they had been used. I gave him $400 for both.

I took them home and cleaned them up and they shoot as good as new. I had to put a new front site on one and some stocks/grips on the other. They are not pretty, but they do a fine job at the range.

I had a six inch blue Security Six that I loved. It was the first center fire pistol I bought with my own money. I had a buddy that just loved that gun and had to have it. After many years of trying I finally sold it to him with the condition that if he ever tired of it he would sell it back to me. His wife could out shoot both of us with it. She was scary good. Unfortunately when they got a divorce she got custody of my gun.

Long story short, when I ordered my (GF-84H) Stainless Police Service Six online I fell in love with it instantly and was very surprised to find out when I researched the production date that it shared the same date of birth as my beautiful wife. I don’t think I would be able cope with losing either one.

My first centerfire revolver was a 4" Security Six. As others have written, I sold it to a friend with the stipulation if he sold it I wan it back. That was in 1977 or 1978. I have lost touch with him over the years. Dang!

Fast forward to April 2005, find a 6" in a pawn shop and something clicks, and I want it. I know I will not carry it on or off duty, I just want it.

The acquistion of that gun lead me to this forum, and the rest is history.

No sir no police markings on them. Like NYPD. The man I got them from is still doing some training for private outfits down at the range. I'll have to ask him one day what outfit he was with. I see him once in awhile.

I have owned two Security/Service Sixes. I still have one left. I will never part with this one. If I had to sell my revolvers I would keep just one and it would be my Police Service Six 4 inch. I have always shot my Service Six well and consider it my best all around revolver. Below is my best revolver.
