Cylinder Serial Numbers

Are all convertible cylinders marked with serial numbers? I am looking at a SS Blackhawk .357/9mm but the owner says there is no serial number on the cylinder.

probably just cannot "see" it, most of the 'spare' (extra) cylinders should be numbered with the last 3 digits of the guns serial number, BUT as long as it "fits' and functions", oh well, better to have NO number , than the 'wrong' number,but even then we've seen many,many over the years that are numbered 'wrong' and do work...any doubt, have it checked out.............

Thanks for the info. It's about 10 hrs away so I can't check it out. I would have to take the seller at his word.

Or ask him to scrub the front of the cylinder and look at it in bright sunlight and with a magnifying glass, it's to his benefit to be able to say the cyl is numbered to the gun. It will just be the last three digits of the gun's serial number and they are not stamped; hand engraved and not very visible!

I can't tell you how many times people say; "No numbers." but just didn't know what to look for and how to 'look' thoroughly.

I have a Blackhawk .45Colt/ACP convertible that Ruger replaced, due to multiple issues.The ACP cylinder has stamped numbers, over which they "pencil engraved" the first three serial #'s of the gun I now own. :roll: . It works just as it should. Don't panic over the small stuff.

Edit: should have said LAST three numbers, as noted earlier.

When talking about convertibles, both of the cylinders should be marked.
As with anything mass produced though, I can see a cylinder getting fitted and then the employee not numbering it...but that wouldn't happen very often.

My mistake, thinking about some of the single six convertibles where only the extra cylinder was marked. Thx.

I have several convertibles that only have one cylinder numbered , purchased new . I have returned convertibles to Ruger to have a new cylinders fitted . Those new cylinders were returned unmarked . arything is possible ..... And used guns could have anything done to them . Buyer beware ....
