Do the current production 44 Special Ruger Flattops still have the grip safety installed and if not is the lockwork similar to the standard New Model Blackhawks?

I think the newest production of them do not have the locks,,, but the first ones did. I have a pair of the original Lipsey's special run & they both have the lock.

Contender is correct--the new ones have no lock. A 521 serial number prefix indicates no lock and a 520 has the internal lock.

Hope this helps

Thanks much trapper; that's what I thought but I wasn't sure. Thanks too for the prefix start. That'll help.

One more quick question: Are the innards of the revolvers without the lock now similar to the older new model Blackhawks? I only ask because the New Model Blacks are one of the few revolvers I can gunsmith almost entirely and I feel comfortable with them. Thanks again all.

yes--innards would be primarily the same as the new model blackhawks. the only difference in the flattops is the smaller frame size and they also feature the reverse indexing pawl. Just so you know, the locks have been removed from the entire ruger single action line!!

That is good to know. I have an early Lipsey flat top in 45LC/45ACP convertible. A friend was interested in one but the lock turned him off.

Turned me off as well from the beginning! There's nothing simpler than dumping the lock:

Internal Locks: Some of the past years NM XR3-RED aluminum and blue XR3 steel GFs have the internal lock (NOT current production). The lock can easily be eliminated using a Bearcat spring seat which is long enough to bridge the longer gap.

You can't even see the lock! Unlike Smith & Wesson with their beautiful key-hole in the side! ;)
