After a long search, I think I have come across the perfect light for this little pistol. At first I was looking at the Insight X2 light designed for subcompact pistols. Size-wise, I think it would work but I wasn't too thrilled about the lower 40 lumen output this light puts out. The other option I was looking at was the TLR-3 or TLR-4. Both are the same size but the 4 has the lazer and the 3 does not. However, when I was at the Cabela's store in Sidney, I had a chance to see one mounted on an SR22 and it just looked kind of spindley sticking out there with enough gap between the switch and trigger guard that I believe it could be a snagging issue so I passed on the TLR series. Recently though I learned about the Crimson Trace Railmaster that looked like it would be a good fit so I ordered one up. It came in today.[:)]
First off, this light fits and fits very well. There is not a very large gap between the trigger guard and switches that should lessen the snagging problem I felt would be more prevelant with the TLR series. It is also an LED with a rated 125 lumen output that blows the X2 out of the water in this regard. I still need to do the LED upgrade to my old M3 and H&K UTL but as it is right now, this little light is even brighter than these 2 models as well. It's very compact, very light and easy to use. It also has 3 modes, constant on, on when the switch is depressed and a constant on strobe flash.
Now for what I don't really like about t. I guess I got spoiled by the quick attach features of the M3 and UTL. Not gonna happen with the Railmaster. Here an interchangable lug for different rails and weapons is slid into the body after the clamps are taken off. Now you loosen the screws that hold the clamp on (should have already been loose to take them off when installing the lug anyways) and rock it onto the rail in a similar fashion to mounting a UTL onto a USP. Then it's a a matter of tightening up the screws which tightens the clamp onto the rail. Not hard to do but no quick release or installation is going to happen either. The other thing that I'm kind of leery about is the battery size. AA or Surefire batteries (CR123) are a dime a dozen and can be had most anyplace. The Railmaster uses a CR2 photo battery. While the battery of this size is needed in a light this small, finding a replacement isn't going to be as easy as running to the hardware store for a pack of AAs or the local PX for a pack of surefire batteries! It's still do-able most likely Wal-Mart sells them (haven't looked yet) just not as convienant.
All-in-all though, I am loving this little light and in a pistol this small, it's nice to find a light that both fits very well and throws out a good level of useable light. Of course, this thread is worthless without pictures so...:
