Tomorrow the is the day for our Senior Saints at my church to have their luncheon and get-together. The theme is "Round Up" and we've been asked to dress western or cowboy style. (When announced yesterday morning, everybody in the congregation turned to look at me.) Friend of mine will be there, and I'm hoping he can play "Home on the Range" on his harmonica.

And this reminds me of the song "The Old Chisolm Trail" and a story connected with it. Don't know of the truth of it, but a good story anyway.

The story goes that there are 147 verses to that song, that starts out like:

Come along boys and listen to my tale,
And I'll tell you my troubles on the Old Chisolm trail..

Supposed only one man ever knew all 147 verses, and one night in Laramie, Wyoming, he was going to sing all 147 verses at the opera house there. Well, at about verse number 27 a cowboy in the audience drew his Colt and shot the singer dead. The local sheriff ordered all to stay until after the performances that followed and he would investigate.

During the investigation, 14 cowboys admitted to the shooting, and the sheriff held them for awhile. But the jury ruled the shooting justified and all were released.

So far no one else has learned all the verses.
