PLEASE excuse my ignorance. I was only going by the fact that he, the ALLEGED killer, explained in detail in a letter he left, how and when he ALLEGEDLY shot the cop and how he, the ALLEGED killer, watched him die.

The overall cost is quite deceiving, as most costs are fixed, such as salaries, overtime, aircraft flight time etc. They would have been incurred if no "manhunt" was on-going. It was previously budgeted and now it's spent and would have been spent anyway.

Just like a major trial - the officers, judge, prosecutors and office staff are all salaried and would have been incurred whether in court, on the golf course, donut shop or in a patrol vehicle.

LE did a great job and found a lot of items in that large forest area, which was impressive. Glad no one else was hurt in this operation but that scumbag will be a drag on the good citizens of PA's tax system, as it seems to take better than 20 years to execute convicted killers outside of Texas.

You have zero idea about the expense; if it was part of a "budget" or what they may have spent over and above the budget in man power, over time, vehicle maintenance and fueling and a host of other expenses. TRUE it's burden on the PA tax payer and the question is, If he hadn't killed an Officer and wounded another would that have committed all those funds, time and effort to the "man hunt" ?

Well colonialgirl, I do have a little experience in that area and by your answer, I seriously doubt you have done very much relative to running a department, office or a business.

Transferring from Peter to pay Paul may be an inconvenience but it is done when needed to keep within your allotted budget.

An example might be the State Police has a fuel budget of 100,000 gallons at $3.05 per gallon - price goes up to $3.45 for 5 months of that year - what do you do? Your options might be to transfer a little from other departments or order your troopers to cut back on the miles driven and run radar from a stationary location for several hours each day etc.

What I'm saying is if the report is true that the overall cost is 11 million dollars spent by several local, State and Federal agencies, well, that 11 million was already budgeted to be spent over the fiscal year - maybe just not the way that the department heads had planned.

Now as far as your bone to pick about whether LE would have put in the same effort to apprehend a killer that just killed an "everyday civilian" meaning non-LE. I would sure hope so with all things equal, as they got on him pretty quick and just kept at it. WRONG Again--
I have over 30 years of experience in running production departments and Quality Control Laboratories; not to mention a Degree in Process Engineering (Production Inventory Control) SO I am QUITE familiar with Costs, Budgets, Over time, etc.
I'm STILL betting the SAME effort and manpower would NOT have been expended in a NON-law enforcement killing.

I can't comment on the costs & how it's handled, as I do not have first hand knowledge. However, I can comment on the facts about a non-LEO vs a citizen.
Anybody remember Eric Rudolph? He was hunted here in the mountains of WNC for months, with hundreds of LEO's & all kinds of expense. While his weapon of choice was a bomb,,, it still only killed one person & wounded a few others if I recall correctly. The efforts to find him were almost a direct reflection on this manhunt. The difference was they DIDN"T catch Eric as quickly & they spent more time & money than this effort. And while Eric was caught by a local LEO,,, the Feds KEPT officers in the area all the years he was wanted.

Irregardless of either case,,,, a lot of how a manhunt is conducted is due to the perceived threat a wanted person is. Eric was considered very dangerous due to his bombing the abortion clinic & then the Olympics. This guy in Pa was considered still very dangerous due to his background where he wanted to wage a war on LEO's.

What about the recent kidnapping of the woman where they had him on video? A lot went into this hunt but due to the fact it was in an urban environment, we as non-LEO's did not get the media blitz of a visible manhunt. And it concluded much quicker.

Often, the media, combined with the circumstances causes a different response than many other cases.

Look at the media & how the case in Ferguson has been handled. Once ANY case catches a major media outlet,,, and if it's not resolved very quickly,,, it will often get blown out of proportion, both in hype & costs.
