The late Jerry Clower had a few good coon dog stories. Now, there's coon dogs, and then there's coon dogs. And don't ever, ever, slight anybody's coon dog. Now we're talkin' black and tan coon hounds, like God intended.

Years ago a friend of mine down in southeast Georgia turned down a new (then) Jeep CJ-7 for his dog, named Ol' Jack. Another turned down a registered Hereford bull.

Up north of Memphis is Henning, Tennessee, rich in Alex Haley's history. Just before coming into Henning, there is a highway rest stop. I've talked with several men who maintain this rest top, and they usually have a good coon dog story. Across the highway (US Hwy. 51) from the rest stop is the Hatchie Wildlife Refuge; runs from Hwy. 51 to the Mississippi River, lots of good bottom land.

Wealthy coon hunters fly into Memphis, with their dogs, and rent SUVs and drive up to Henning. They park their vehicles at the rest stop and hunt the wildlife refuge. They drink coffee (mixed with whatever, I don't know) and swap, buy, or sell coon dogs. The employee of the state hwy. dept. told me of having seen two men dealing for a good coon hound. The price he told me was the dog went for $28,000.

As I recall, the National Coon Dog Cemetery is on US Hwy. 72 near Cherokee, Alabama.

As I said, don't bad mouth anybody's coon hound.

Jerry Clower was a wonderful comedian. He had so many great and funny stories and unlike these days very clean, actually had real humor instead of trash or gutter humor and in most of his records had a fine story that was serious about issues that still are relevant today. Uncle Versie was funny alone with the rest of the Ledbetter family one of the funny ones:

One of his serious but still a good one with an excellent point and done with humor:
