Common sense ballistics....

I feed the birds in my backyard each morning. I had a mixture of small grain such as milo, sunflower seeds, and peanuts in the shell. I threw a handfull of such mixture out with some force this morning. As would be expected, the small grain fell to the ground after only a short distance, the sunflower seed a litle farther, and the peanuts went the greatest distance. What is to be learned from this?

Momentum plays an importand part ~ light bullets shed their velocity much quicker that heavier ones, thus drop at shorter ranges. All of these "projectiles" were propelled at the same velocity. Even when the lighter projectile is propelled at a higher velocity, it still sheds velocity faster. There comes a point when heavy weight cannot be propelled at the higher velocities. This is why bullet choice is so very vital when anticipating long range handgun, or rifle, shots.

One of the Army Technical Manuals I had access to suggested to study exterior ballistics, simply observe the stream from an ordinary garden hose.

I always read and enjoy your posts Bob. I imagine most here would like to have you living next door. I also feed the birds. I have a couple of house type feeders for a seed mix, and a couple suet cake holders. Then I throw some corn down the hill too. Which birds eat the peanuts in the shells ? Curious.

The peanut eaters seem to be the blue jays and a red bellied woodpecker. I think there is a nest of red bellied woodpeckers close by, though haven't seen it.

This birdhouse I made has become a bird feeder. I place some feed and a couple of peanuts on the "front porch" and the wodpecker and cardinal sem to feel that this is their private dining room:

OK, that's a really neat bird house. Just needs a little toy tractor "parked" next to the door ! Maybe, Mail Pouch painted down the side ? Thanks for reply.
