If my memory is correct,, they use the same threading for the Vaqueros as the Blackhawks. No sense in changing something that works. As for where to find one,, well , start with Numrich Gun Parts Corp. Next,, maybe one of the custom gunsmiths such as Reeded, Bowen, Harton etc will sell a spare,,! I know Ruger won't sell him one.

He won't go wrong with Sturm, Ruger & Co.'s service department.

flatgate

How bout some more information?? Is it blue or stainless? Caliber?

WHY does he need a new barrel?? Theres all kinds of used barrels available. Any Smith can replace it with either a take off or a custom....

YOU need to do some reading.

Home Depot sells everything he needs, vice grips and cast iron pipe, any length he wants. (an attempt at humor.)

I agree with Flatgate. Send it back to Ruger.

I guess I didn't know this was an "answer-on-demand" forum. I'll get in line now to march. Who do I "salute"?................Dick :!:

What I wanna know is where do I go to school to learn the answers so I can hop right to it each time a question is asked, and will my VA benefits pay for it?

TIA,
Jim

I agree--IF the new barrel desired is for the same gun/configuration, I'd give Ruger a try. Conversions/swaps they won't even approach. Before Ruger finally came out with their own .44 Special New Vaquero, like a lot of others I wanted to do a "simple" conversion on my .357 NV--.44 Mag Vaquero barrel with a reaming out of the cylinder--wa la--and deal with re-marking issues down the line. Although they no doubt had barrels laying around (witness the "clean up" .44M Davidson runs they've done from time to time), no way no how. Not if that's not a configuration they'd done as regular production. AND then--as now--used .44 Mag Vaquero barrels weren't growing on trees, rarer 'n hens teeth. Anyway, seemed simple to me. 44 Mag Blackhawk barrels were/are a little easier to come by but I wanted a simple swap (esp considering wanting the same level of finish and didn't want to mess with sights...no muss no fuss). I had my smith on the constant lookout, and at the ready to save me from having to ship my gun off to Bowen, Clements, et al--as great as they are--for nine months (avg wait at the time) and many hundreds of $. Never happened. Try Ruger, and that's still just a maybe...and here's hoping what your friend wants is the same barrel for/from the same configuration they'll consider....
OR, as others have mentioned, maybe a used barrel - as long as it's not .44 Mag!

BIA, The best ways to learn answers to gun questions are to actually "work" on guns! Start with your "own". After you start to get a little proficient, your buddies will want theirs worked on. When you accumulate enough experience, equipment and tooling, get yourself an FFL and some insurance and then you can hang out a shingle. The schools are ok but don't give you enough "hands" on to get you quickly proficient. Any way you look at it, it's a "long" haul! I've been working guns for 44 + years and what I "don't" know would fill an "ocean" of water compared to what I "do" know, a "thimble" full of water!..................Dick

Jim Stroh at ALPHA PRECISION in Comer GA has an extensive web site of the various things he does. If he doesn't have a take off in the length you want, have him make your pal a new barrel. He can also do a nice trigger job..got a couple of my Original Size VAQUEROS down around 2.5 pounds and smooooth. He's done a bunch of guns for me over the years and I have some more for him to work his magic on...all I need is yankee dollars to send with the guns.

I'm gonna go with, and I know it's a big stretch, so bear with me, a VAQUERO barrel. Or, since you and your friend are seemingly going to do the work in a garage someplace, and apparently have no experience, how about a hunk of steel pipe? Get an arc welder and a hack saw and just go at it.

In all seriousness though, get the gun to a trained and reliable gunsmith and he'll know what to do. Certainly a better and safer bet than asking a bunch of guys on an internet forum, no matter how go the forum is.
