On last evening's news. A resident saw and had video of a medium sized black bear crossing the street in a populated area of SW Columbia MO. Resident stated the bear approached him but he was able to get inside a vehicle after which the bear simply walked away. Police did not respond nor did MDC. o_O

The bear crossed with the light; there nobody paid him no mind.
At least he did spit on the windshield, wipe it off and demand money for cleaning the windshield.

I'm not a bear expert but based on the number of strides required to cross a fairly wide street and comparison to other objects, this animal was 150# or more and obviously not afraid of human presence.

The agency I used to work for had yearly training meetings at a hotel complex less than a mile from where this bear was seen. I can only imagine the hoorah that would have resulted from a bear walking across the parking lot. There's also a poplar hiking/biking route through that area and University of MO/Mizzou Arena is just up the road.

We routinely have them in our yard. Black bears, normally, are pretty mellow. My wife chases them away from the bird feeders with a super soaker

I guess it's a matter of perception. We have all sorts of vermin/varmints/wild pests near the house but I'd take great exception to having a bear in my yard. :unsure:
We commonly have deer and turkeys in our front yard and often see coyote or bobcat tracks within 150 yards of the house but I draw the line for predators in the yard. I have a longtime friend who lives in central Wisconsin where they have bear problems often. He keeps a loaded shotgun by the door for those 'problems' that don't run away.

Well, at least they didn't claim there weren't any bears living in the area. When things like bears, mountain lions and most recently bobcats are spotted that's the default response from animal control and fish & game. This even when clear video, tracks and scat are present.
I'm pressing my luck when I say this but the last few years were brutal with bears causing damage on my property even with precautions. This year all they seem to want to do is drink the water from the bird bath on top deck. They nosed around the smoker/grill area but only moved stuff around. Had paw prints on car hood. No big deal. Although it is pretty annoying when they walk across the front porch and set the door cam chime off at 0200.
