Arkansas had it first Bear fatality last week. 100lb Bear attacked an elderly man. Was reported this was first Bear fatality since mid 1900's in AR.

Black bear are not known to be aggressive, perhaps the "victim" was trying to give it a hug? People are stupid like that, look at the story of the Grizzly man and his girlfriend.

Where I hunted black bears for a few years in eastern Manitoba black bears are feared by the “First Nation” people. Mothers never let their children play alone outdoors as the bears treat them like caribou and moose calves. Just another source of protein…
Black bears are omnivorous opportunists and should never be taken lightly. They also are the fastest animal I have ever witnessed at short distances.

why speculate when information is so easily obtained?

Family says Arkansas bear attack victim has died

while 72 year old man was on a tractor on a rural road 9/3 he was attacked by 70 lb yearling black bear, son found him during the attack, and wardens killed the bear. Man died from his injuries 9/14.

sad neither father or son were able to defend the attack - rip.

I wonder if the tractor was in operation at the time. Surprised it didn't scare the bear off.
seems he was spreading gravel with a tractor.

Franklin County man attacked by bear has died

I haven't found what size tractor, what exactly he was doing with it, etc. that might indicate what provoked the attack.

also unknown physical condition of the men, weapons or tools they may have used defending the attack, etc.

sad anyway you look it.

A 70lb bear is pretty skinny. Either young and inexperienced, diseased, or starving. Any one of the three might explain the reason for the attack. It may well have been rabid.
