Hey guys,

I bought a Colt Civil War Commemorative 22 short only, shooter grade with no box or paperwork. It was just neat and I liked it. It looks really great with my Savage 101 and a mint 1969 H. Scmidt, Hawes Buffalo Scout. I know that all three together won't make one good Bearcat, but they do look retro. (I graduated high school in 1969)

My question is ........... I've searched the internet and all the photo's of the Colt CW Comm. show the faux cylinder in blued/black finish like the barrel. Mine is factory nickel and I can't find any info to support the nickel finish. The barrel is blue/black and the backstrap is gold/brass like all the pictures. I'm sure the cylinder on mine is factory, it's not a refinish job.

Does anyone have any idea why mine is nickel plated? Did Colt make a non-commemorative version? I've done everything short of calling Colt but I know you guys are very well versed and someone out there knows the answer.

Well guys,

With no responses I decided to call Colt. Knew it was a long shot but thought I'd do it anyway. They didn't have a clue. I know this isn't aftermarket nickel, it's factory........................I just don't know why.

I guess it's my mystery..............think I'll advertise it as a "RARE" prototype, NOT!

You might want to ask on the Colt forum, you'd probably find more people with detailed knowledge of Colt's.

If I had to hazard a guess, and trust me, it is just a SWAG, and that would be that somewhere over time, for one reason or another, the cylinder got swapped out. Maybe the original got lost or damaged.
 
is it really have a cylinder?? we thought they were a single shot and you had to pop the swage pin to remove the barrel to load and unload it.............came in a bluish, grey case, some even came in "pairs" and I would bet they did make them in nickel also. Its been a while, and sorry no great demand around here over the year, a tough sell...........but like anything else gotta find a TRUE Colt fanatic. Try their Forum......................

Thanks for the reply. Yes, it's a faux cylinder single shot. Pull the wedge, slide the barrel forward, slide the cylinder forward and load one 22 short in a single bore. It's a novelty purely and a pain to shoot if you have a hankerin' too. It's just neat and a great conversation piece. They came in singles, pairs and were all boxed for the CW centennial back in 1961.

Think I'll just display it and enjoy the look. You are very true, it would be a tough sell and I'm not able to afford Colts anyway. So I'll just have fun with it for now.

If it's just a nickel finish you could have it stripped off and blued..... got a picture of this thing... sounds
interesting?

Edit: I found a picture on the internet.... Colt 1860 with brass.... would still like to see a picture of yours.

Really, I don't know, but it doesn't appear to be a refinish to me. Sorry to get back so late, but things have been busy.
As far it this little shooter goes, it doesn't really matter to me. I'm going to keep it and have some fun with it. Makes a great conversation item too.

Thanks for the photo's!! Yep that's my Colt ~ 'cept my cylinder is nickel. Go figure?
