In the fall of 1991, my stepfather called me to tell me that he had his uncle's pistol after his aunt died. Her two surviving sisters had given it to him after they found it in her attic. He told me that he thought it might be loaded, and wanted me to come clear it and check it out.
His uncle Will had been a town constable and railroad detective in the small township of Courtney, NC and had died in his sleep. His wife had apparently found the gun in the nightstand...wrapped it in a diaper...and stored in the attic.
It was a near pristine Commercial Colt Government Model and it was in Condition One, with 6 rounds in the magazine.
I cleared it...gave it a cursory inspection...loaded the loose round into the magazine...chambered it...stepped outside...and fired it 7 times to slidelock. It functioned perfectly.
The kicker? Uncle Will died of a heart attack when he was a very young man...in the summer of 1929. The Colt's serial numbers resolved to 1922. So, the pistol laid in an attic in Condition One for over 62 years...with ammunition that was at least that old...and it worked fine.
