Coast Range...

I've spent quite some time this year in the Cascade and Coast Range of Oregon. I've seen very few deer, but as always, I still win, just experiencing the outdoors.

We've had a ton of rain, and a mushroom eruption. Mushrooms in the woods by the millions of every size and shape. What I don't know about mushrooms, you could write a book. This cartoon mushroom from Mario Brothers, I had no idea really existed.

The mushroom is an Amanita Muscaria. Very poisonous, and hallucinogenic. Cool looking though.

Stupid hippies have figured out a way to "safely" consume enough to get high, some sort of process I've been told.
I would never trust any such process, even if I ever wanted to "get high", which I never have and never will. Mushroom poisoning is a horrible and painful way to die, as your kidneys and liver shut down.

I doubt many druggies would risk it in Oregon these days. Not when they can buy hallucinogenic mushrooms already packaged up at a "dispensary". Darwin denied again...

I know a little about mushrooms... and I mean just a little... but I do know to stay away from that one.... the pretty red ones will usually make you dead. I've been know to pick some bollets (they don't have gills) and even eat a fresh puff ball on occasion.

Had a 3rd or 4th cousin that wanted me to work on her house and she was all excited to let me know she was going to cook my mother's recipe for Chicken, Mushroom and Rice casserole for me.... I was about half way through the first helping when she informed me it was not really chicken but the turkey her husband has shot the week before and the mushrooms were ones she picked out of the back yard the day before......

Carlos Casteneda described the Yaqui Indian way of processing Datura sp. It involved crushing/grinding the seeds, allowing a fungus to grow on the mash, then a beetle would graze on the fungus. They would be killed and dried, mixed with tobacco and smoked!

Who would have figured that out?? Like roasting cashews before they are safe to eat!

Carlos Casteneda described the Yaqui Indian way of processing Datura sp. It involved crushing/grinding the seeds, allowing a fungus to grow on the mash, then a beetle would graze on the fungus. They would be killed and dried, mixed with tobacco and smoked!

Remember, lobster 9and salmon) were "po' folk's" food! My mom would not eat salmon after growing up during the Depression!

Yup. I'd be willing to wager the first one to try it was one of them "po' folks" way, way back before the depression.
