whats a good way to clean up old leather holsters and sheaths that are darkened and grimy looking?

Some soapy water and a washcloth or toothbrush to clean. Then oil with something like "LeatherNew."

Can't beat Saddle Soap and oil with Neatsfoot Oil. IMHO.

Tellico's answer hit the nail on the head. Saddle soap is what leather wants, cleans and conditions all in one. Be careful which conditioner or oil you use on a holster, these generally soften the leather and can cause retention issues depending on the design.

I do a bit of leatherworking and Tellico is spot on. Use water with saddle soap VERY sparingly. Wipe off excess then oil with either Neats Foot or Olive Oil. Oil VERY sparingly. Rub a small amount in and wipe off excess.

Enjoy those old holsters, they have a great patina and history that new leatherwork can't match.

I do a bit of leatherwork also. My favorite for dirty leather is glycerin saddle soap to clean and after drying a light application of Lexol brand leather treatment.
