Chronographs

I am in the market for a chronograph, and thought I would research them starting here. Which brand and why? (Of those still available), and which technologies (infrared or shadow/lighted). I would be using it exclusively for recreation a few time a year for my reloading and bow tuning (so need a low end velocity range.

Don't get the Chrony Beta Master.

Mine developed a strange malfunction the first time I used it...

Actually, it was a great unit until a 125gr .357 mag slug turned it off.

Done with my SP101...

So, here's good advice for you for when you get one...no matter the brand.

Don't shoot it!

My PACT One has its brains separate from its skyscreen.
The skyscreen replacement costs are low.....(this is the same PACT One I shot five of six with that 45 Colt / 395g load I was trying to develop; skyscreens flexing and flying everywhere).

Agreed, to a point:

I have an Oehler 33 that's closing in on 30 yrs old. It still works just fine (though its older technology does use a bunch of batteries!)

However, Oehler seems to have gotten out of the consumer chrony business to concentrate on more "industrial" grade instruments, w/ correspondingly higher prices. I think one can get a lot more bang for the buck sticking w/ the Chrony series these days, unless one's working w/ the unit constantly and can make a "better" one cost effective.

Regardless of one's choice, none of 'em will fare well when used as a target, so models w/ a separate skyscreen/brain setup are something to consider. W/o admitting why, I've replaced a couple of screens on my old Oehler for a whole lot less than replacement of the entire unit would have been, even if it were a $100 entry level Chrony! ;)

Keep it simple. My F1 seems to work great. Only had it a few months though, but perfectly satisfied with it.

Dittos. Have used an F1 for about 6 years with no complaints whatsoever... 8)

+1 for the F1 , now if I used it everyday I`d opt for more bells & whistles & a printer , but the F1 will serve the average reloader very well .

I used to grin at people that shot their Chronys ---- until I put a .44 bullet in MINE last week. I'd had it nearly 30 years. How the heck do we DO that? The new one is supposed to arrive today. $85 including shipping. :oops:
