Nice rifle! last year I had one like it,but SS. Mine had a safety button with very sharp edges that would bite with heavy loads if one got his thumb too close when firing. Since you are going to be loading, one thing that has come on the scene in the last ten years is the short length 45-70 brass that hornady uses in their factory ammo with the Flex-tip bullets. It's noticibly shorter than W-W, R-P, or Federal brass that is SAMMI length. One can load either, but one has to readjust the expander and seating dies. I use a Lee Factory Crimp die on my standard length ammo and I believe Redding makes a short length crimp die for the shorter Hornady brass. You have the right rifle for handloading the 45-70, it'll shoot anything you put in it. Good luck! Bob1 8)

Nice rifle!!! Mine is the new special run with a heavier (C weight) 26" barrel and Circissian walnut stocks. They are not as nicely figured as the older Ruger, but the trade off is that they are harder wood. So far I am happy. I too am playing with paper patch and perhaps black powder. Got to see how hard they are to disassemble for cleaning. jack

These are fine rifles, I sure like my No. 1 .45-70. I had the throat lengthened by about a 1/4" in order to get more case capacity (it can drive 300gr TSX bullets at close to 2600 fps with RE7), and had the trigger pull lightened to 2.5# -

Mine is the 26 C wt bbl. As is, it has NO throat. Standard length WW or RP cases only work with bore rider bullets, like factory 405 gr and some of the older cast numbers. 300 - 350 gr Hornady and Sierra, seated to the cannelure, won't come close to letting the breach close. I shortened a batch for jacketed loads, cut about 3/16 off. You shouldn't need the Lee crimp die, but that is another variable on the endless list of things to try.

There is an aftermarket safety offered for the #1. I got one, but haven't put it in yet. I will say, it is a beautiful piece of work, and shaped so it doesn't catch the fired case coming out. Ruger could make one just like it, but they don't. The factory unit has sharp edges, catches the fired case, and is quite noisy.
