CCI Primer Problem

Loaded up some 9mm 115 JHP the other day. Had my first failure on the 3rd clip full through my Glock 17(first failure in 5K rounds). Pulled the offending round out of the gun, and there was a small strip of metal across the primer??? Looked to have been made that way, it wasn't loose! I have not had any other failures since (800 rounds). I tossed the round, wished I would have kept it! I've loaded thousands of rounds and never seen anything like it before. Has CCI manufacturing gone down hill?
On a plus note, first time using Montana Gold bullets......A+++ to them! Will be doing a big order from them soon!

You might examine any other fired case from your gun; you're describing the signature Glock striker indentation.

Wild guess? Improperly seated primer.

Nope a strap of metal went across the primer it was solidly attached! Looked like a manufacturing problem. Like I said I've loaded thousands of rounds and never seen this before.

Has CCI manufacturing gone down hill?

Hi,

I'd be slow to chastise CCI (or any mfr) for a single failure out of many 1000s loaded.

Especially considering the primer situation for the last year to 18 months: the factories have been working to full capacity and are still behind. It's only recently that I've even seen any of the more popular sizes and brands available online, and still haven't seen anything in the LGS...

Which means that, personally, I'd expect a slightly higher failure rate w/ primers for a while: you can't run the line full bore for extended periods of time w/o something slipping thru! (Check Wyandot Jim's notes about his pard's experience w/ some of his primers... )

The only problems I've had with CCI primers is finding them. That's finally starting to get a little better though.

Have you examined other fired cases from your gun?

Weshoot2 I've seen probably 15K Glock firing pin strikes! I know what they look like! I own 5 Glocks. This was a piece of metal (like a small strap) across the primer. Primer was seated correctly, it was a manufacturing defect. Thanks for the help. I'm new to Ruger forum's, not guns and reloading (about 45 year exp. there). Thanks again for trying to help...Bru

I understand.
Odd, though. Computer-driven optical sensors (concept scarfed from Federal, now under the same umbrella corp.) "examine" each primer during the process, so it's hard to accept one got past.
But it can happen, no doubt about that.

That is why I was wondering, I've loaded thousands of rounds over my life time and never seen this kinda thing before. Thought something might be up. So far so good on the rest, Ive been keeping a close eye out. Just hate to have something happen. Been teaching my 17 year old granddaughter to handle the Glocks....think a G19 will be there on her 18th birthday. She shot her Mom's python the other day and liked it better then my super redhawk, less heavy. Thanks again for the help....Bru

In 1976 I found a "X" primer missing its anvil; I think I still have it.

I admit I've used a vast (we're talking "big") number of CCI-brand primers over my years; it was always my preferred brand.
Big number.....but that "X" was a CCI.

WHAT I ACTUALLY DO: When I dump primers into my brass Dillon flipper I examine them for internal components present (as I've never forgotten that CCI primer from 1976).
AFTER I've boxed the finished ammo I inspect the primers for height and defects.

Its kinda strange the way we all favor different things. I have had great success with federal primers. But have used almost everything out there(other then Wolf). Have 4K of 9mm brass coming in this week so will pick up some Federals tomorrow. The only thing I'm short on is small pistol and small rifle, need to stock back up.
Got the deal of the month the other day. 7K rounds of 223 brass and a dillon 450 (which I will use for my 300 Win Mag. for $225 plus 4k of 9mm for $70. Been a good month for deals!
So my summer is planned out, get a lot of 223 loaded up. Load up about 5K of 44 mag (all needs to be trimmed ), and some more 9mm. Plus dial in my 300 Win Mag.(new brass that all needs to be processed). At least I'll be cool this summer in the loading room! Good excuse to stay out of the 100+ degree weather! :lol:

I have great success with Federal primers, too.
