For those who have never used the triple deuce it is great round. I gpt my 340 E back in the early 70's and I have long since lost track of the jack rabbits and yotes that fell to the 55gr HPBT. I was layed off some months ago and am waiting for a recall - if I had the funds this would be in safe already at $750.

Carpenter Rifle?. Does any one have information about this? :roll:

Love the Deuce and Deuce Mag, and wildcats from them - especially the 17 Javelina and 6X47. The Deuce ruled the roost for a lot of years with the BR crowd, and is still better than the 223 IMO.

Still have one Deuce, a Sako Custom Shop L461 with a Douglas barrel.

I learned to shoot with exactly that set up, I still use my old IMR 4198 and 52 BTHP load in current 222 rifles. Just to relate a "non-gun story" .....

In the early 70's I was woodchuck hunting with the 340 - typical MA cow pasture. Most folks don't realize in rural NE there's most always a home or farmhouse or road nearby. I was laying on the ground, waiting for a woodchuck and up the dirt path comes a car. They didn't see me on the ground & parked about 20 ft away. The doors open and out come a guy & girl and they start making a little naked "hey, hey" on the ground by the back of the car.

Awkward moment. I couldn't get up, they'd see & figure I was peeping. What to do? And then about 100 yds down range up pops a big, fat woodchuck.

Oh what the hell. BANG, WHOOSH ..... SPLAT!!!!

I stood up & walked downhill. No doubt the couple thought they were about to have their own personal "Deliverence" moment. I don't think they even put on their drawers back as they dove back into the car, peeled out and drove away.

I can remember when I saw the first one of these come up on GB with a starting bid of $1800 about a year later one started at $1500 I cant remeber if they ever sold a few years later one came up with a buy it now for $500 my gun fund was empty I looked at my wife and said HONEY she said what now then said never mind just buy it AWE I love that girl It turned out it was #89 of the run Im still looking for a box for it anyone have one ?

I have a 340 D in .222. A locall game Wardens Brother died a few years back and I bought it to help with funeral expenses...Cheap simmons scope...lots of extras with it..Serial # 217 487 can you enlighten me about serial numbers...I take it mine is a Delux..sure has nice wood..

Carpenter Technologies is the company that supplies the various alloys of steel for Ruger. I believe Baron Technologies did the engraving for them. Ruger made the guns for all the employees of Carpenter, they are all the same configuration. I'm not sure if this is the only run for Carpenter or not though.

Interesting - Back in the day Savage was marketing rifles as rifle/scope packages. Does the scope on yours have "Savage" emblazened on it? Many many years ago I came back from a trip minus a turret cover and I've never been able to find an ID mark on the scope. Its a 4X. Ser # is A77038X - white line pistol cap and butt spacer. Mine still shoots like a lazer - I could never sell it - too many good memories and good friends in addition to many hundreds of rounds.
The very next rifle I got was a 10-22 IIRC a deluxe one - Same white line spacers on pistol grip and butt. That one was stolen in early 1973 along with my camara bag, 2 8mm move camera's, all my 35mm slides and camera filters for my Argus C 3.

Any way, I was just wondering. BTW, :roll: I've got to get with the program and come up to speed on getting my avatar posted in addition to pictures - makes every thing so much clearer.

Coyote Down : No the scope is just one of regular simmons..I like the gun but I really haven't shot it since I got it. The warden "Offered" to give me my money back for it...HMmmnnn...there was 14 boxes of factory Winchester 55 gr. Full metal case shells as part of the deal..Reloading dies, more shells, a few reloads, etc..The factory Winchesters were marked Price 6.50....

I have often thought about putting a good scope (Known) on it and seeing how it really shoots..
