You can go to medium rings but the low may be to low. On my 77/44 the bolt handle just and mean just clears the eyepiece of a 1x3 weaver as well as a 2x7 browning.
I had lows on my old 77/44. The Weaver on there leaves enough clearance for the bolt handle. Not much but it worked. I have had that issue with some of my 77/22's and certain scopes.

Aside from potential bolt handle interference problems, I have found on any Ruger rifle I have tried that low rings may work for the scope, but not for me. Comb height combined with my rather plump cheek means I have to scrunch down really awkwardsly in to the stock to get a full field of view through the scope unless I have at least medium-height rings.
