I'm doing vol phone work under a SAT approach path...apt is about 2 miles away at the most. It's the first time I've seen one of these fly in here in close to 3 yrs doing this.

The first C-17 I ever saw was while on vacation up in the New England area. We were driving on the Interstate when one came across a field very low and right over the top of our car.

Now the Tennessee Air National Guard here in Memphis is equipped with them.

There is an Air Guard unit 20mi south of here. It's common to see 3 bird flights in the county. Word is besides training they are taking IR film watching for pot fields and meth labs. They flew over some yrs back in the middle of us holding an assault weapons course, 20 guys with AK's and AR's. We all waved. The comment was made that the sheriff would be here soon. Nah..he was invited but declined earlier.

After having spent years around C-130s, C-141s, and C-5s in the Memphis Air Guard I was actually surprised at just how good a C-17 is. It's fast, holds lots of cargo, short runway capabilities and easy to maintain, esp. compared to the C-5.

They fly that thing with a stick, just like a fighter plane.

Hi,

They fly out of March ARB in Riverside, CA, quite frequently. It's flat over there, and from a distance they don't look so big. But a few months ago one came right over the house. Whole different picture! Dunno how high he was, but just guessing when it went to flying real close to the surrounding hills (3500' to 11,500'), I doubt it was too much more than 1000' AGL. "Reach up and tickle the gear" close. Pretty impressive!

I figured it was a training mission for some of the rougher terrain they have to deal with in some of the areas where we're involved. Hadn't thought of the surveillance aspect, but there is a bit of "agricultural activity" in part of the area they were flying over. ;)

If you like watching C-17s come to Wright-Patterson A/F Base in Fairborn, OH. They fly daily.

The C-17 is equipped with many electro-magnetic sensors. They insure all the doors and windows are closed tight during flight. Those sensors were designed and perfected by Electro Corporation in Sarasota. I did the photo reductions for all the circuit boards for the C-17 and the F-22 Raptor.

I saw one at the air show at Randolph a few years ago and Kelly has some C-5s and F-16s but I was wondering why it was landing at the San Antonio airport. It's mainly 737s and smaller types that fly that path.

My son got his USAF pilot wings yesterday. This summer he'll be going back to Vance for C-17 training.

Was getting ready to fly out of K2 Uzbekistan when the AC asked my buddy and I if "you two old guys want to ride up front"? Of course we did! Flew all the way to Rhein Main Germany. Great flight and an impressive airplane but the best part is the cargo area and troop seating area is warm!!!!!!!

75% of the time when a C-5 is down, it is engine related. For the C-5's that have gone through RERP and received the new engines, that will no longer be the case. They should be MUCH more reliable. The TF-39's were only installed on C-5's, there was never a commercial version of that engine. You can imagine how hard it is to find spare parts for them now. The new CF-6's are a commercial engine, much more modern, with easy to find parts.

snake, just remember to tell your son to depressurize the cabin before he opens any of the 17's doors. faulty guages killed some guys during fleet intro.

Just got off the phone with the kid--he goes to Altus AFB in May, not back to Vance.

He was telling me that somehow he got into the program without ever taking some sort of "pilot predictor" test which supposedly scores your chances of completing flight training. When he finally got around to taking the test, almost through his T-1 Jayhawk training, he scored 18 percent. HAHAHAHAHHA! Tells me something's wrong with that test. He said they had a couple of aeronautical engineering grads from the Air Force Academy wash out of flight training.

He told me that he went to the FAA office yesterday and took the tests and is now rated Commercial, Instrument, and Multiengine Land. Very cool, huh?

cool indeed

I was at Randolph when the T-1 sim was installed. It was made in VA by Quintron Corp and is the prototype;the mfr was behind schedule and had to deliver that one because they had not made the second one yet. I did some repairs on it,mainly in the 3-channel visual system.

Very Cool Snake. Back in 2009, when I was in Moreno Valley (Riverside County/across the street from Riverside)California those C-17's flew over my apartment almost daily out of March Field. WooHoo! What a plane!

Imagine going back in time with a C-17 and showing Wilbur and Orville that it can fly?

Living until 1948, imagine what Orville saw in his lifetime. What did he think about amazing WWII planes such as the P-51 Mustang, the B-29, or the P-38? Airplanes as big as the Spruce Goose flew during his lifetime; I wonder if he heard about its one and only flight? Did he hear about Yeager's sound-breaking flight?

Hi,

That's more than cool, Snake! Please give him another "Congrats!"

Snake,
That is Great.
There has got to be some worthless excuse why we don't have any pictures of the winging. Well that is what it's called in the Navy, when you get your wings of Gold. I pinned on Daughters and Sons wings, did you? It was a highlight of my life
From having two Kids receive their wings. I can tell you that it will be the most important day in their life. Yea other days will be important but not the same.
Share it with us.
