Buckeye Matched Set Matched No More...

I was at a local auction that had a matched S/N set of Buckeye revolvers, the S-32X and S-3840. They weren't 100%, but 98-99% with boxes and literature. I felt good when I got the S-32X for $650. I figured the S-3840 would be higher, but not outrageous. Well, I was wrong. I bailed at $950.00. So, another set is broken up. I do have a 38-40, so I am not too disappointed, but it would have been nice to have the set.

Wait, you bought the first one and then not the second, when you knew you couldn't afford both, and then you're sad the "set" was broken up? What am I missing here?
I presume the set was private property of someone prior to selling them...?

Sounds to me like the fault in breaking them up lies with whoever determined what the lots would be at auction. How would you know whether you could afford both until the auction for both was over?

I think the OP's point is that where there was once a set,,, now they are separate. Do not give him grief for not wanting to spend a lot more on something,,, or that he may have not had enough money to keep them together.
What I get out of this is the sad fact a set is broken,,, that's all!

Amen, this 'breaking up" is simply the greed of the auction house, to get the most out of BOTH...
I know, he is doing it for the family, get them the MOST money............horse crap....(fees)
seen many "sets" over the years, and seen most of them "break up" due to some one either not wanting the other caliber ( this was always the biggest reason) and like around here, we can sell the 32 caliber one (1989) always easier, more often and for MORE money than the 38049 /10 mm (1990) every time.........
as long as you got what YOU want, good for you...........
Back when they came out, I had the chance to buy any and all of them as we did a lot of business with John at Buckeye, and our shop s had little or no calling ( Interest) in them, so we passed, and they were "cheap" ( affordable) back then..........same with Colts revolvers back then....................whoddathunk :roll:

The guns were offered back to back in a 250 gun auction at #63 and #64. I was prepared to go 800 on both. When I got the .32 reasonable, I thought I had some wiggle room on the .38-40, but not a grand. I had already bought about 15 guns at this point and money doesn't grow on trees!! My plan was to get the .38-40 matched to the .32 and then sell the stand alone .38-40 that I already had. Whooda figured that someone else wanted an stand alone .38-40 for $950?? Could be that someone just wanted to run me up thinking that I would pay anything just to keep the set together. Well, if that was the case, they were wrong. I'm not losing any sleep, as not having the matched set will not lead me to throwing the rope up over the rafters. I have one of each now and I am happy. I got the Marlin 1894CB in .32 H&R, that makes me even happier!!

Out of curiosity what did the Marlin 1894 Cowboy in 32 H&Rgo for, bought one several years ago on Gunbroker and paid a good price for it at the time $830, from what I've seen that price is now a bargain.

Was curious what the auction price was?

No intent of selling it, as have a couple Ruger Bisley 32's to go with it and now a Dan Wesson.

Also saw your last name and location, are you related to George Funk who did the 1/8 and 1/4 scale cannons in the Gettysburg area?

I paid $1050 for the .32 H&R, it is NIB, I think I can get 1300-1400 for it. No relation to George, but funny you mention cannons....... I made this 2/3 scale last spring...shoots billiard balls. Maybe we do share some DNA!!

That's a very good price nowadays. The gb prices are absolutely crazy.
If only I'd known back then...

Boy that would look mighty fine towed behind my riding mower and aimed at some mole mounds. All I would need would be a place to strap on a lawn chair and a cooler for the wiat time between firings. :lol:

Now that I have slept on it, perhaps one that shoots golf balls would be better. The the local driving range probably would not be near as upset as the pool hall, when a few of their balls started to go missing. :wink:
