Brutal weather in the midwest

After complaining loudly about the rough winter we had this past year, now I can complain about the brutal heat of the last few days. High 80's may not seem high to you Texas and Florida boys, but when combined with high humidity so that the Heat Index is 100 or more is pretty rough in the midwest. Today I took my young dog for his daily walk (the old 14 year old dog can't take even moderate heat anymore so I left him home) and after about three quarters of a mile she made it clear that she had had enough and wanted to go home. We turned around and went home, and in that brief walk of about 30 minutes total I was soaked with sweat from head to toe. So all winter I think about the good weather coming and the chances to go out riding on my beautiful motorcycle, and now that summer is here I have days like today when riding would definitely be less than fun. I guess its time to move to San Diego, the south of France, or somewhere with better year round weather than Illinois.

San Diego probably not such a good idea...massive drought (except today a few thunderstorms from the Baja hurricane)...we have no water....lawns are all brown...can't water...soon to be a "flushing restriction"...please, come visit but we are overflowing with folks that came to visit and stayed...now there is no water for anyone...fire season this year could be major...This is what can happen:

No flooding or severe storms here. Just wet ... then hot. That's OK. As long as I'm on the green side of the grass, I'm happy. :D

Well, let me see, the water in our fields have almost drained but it's far too late to replant. But at least we have severe T-storms predicted tonight.

It's kind of amazing really, the Algorites told us that the west coast would experience massive flooding and the midwest multi-year drought starting in 2010. Instead, Indiana, being a great plains state is getting rained on while regions of California that are desert are being... deserts. Go figure.

Continual rain and flooding in north MO. Lots of crops not planted or ruined by excess water. Hay crop is questionable and is deteriorating daily. I haven't started cutting hay yet and this is the latest except the summer I worked in Colorado(didn't bale hay until 3rd week of August that year). Pastures are suffering from too much rain and not enough sun. Roads are falling apart due to lack of maintenance and flooding.

re: " As long as I'm on the green side of the grass, I'm happy."

great thoughts....however here the typical seasonal 'dormant earth tone yellow/browns/ and all crispy colors' have seized the land.

I don't take the heat as well as decades ago when I'd go to the swimming hole during such travails. Now I mumble about 'someday' might get a window A/C device.

And it's odd that driving around in a/c Jeep is far cooler than even normal shade.

Hi,

Right here we're having typical inland SoCal weather: "Don't like it, stick around. We'll have all four seasons in a week!" Yesterday was 104 and dry. Last night, the phone had an emergency alert message about a massive windstorm, then this morning I awoke to tremendous thunder and it rained pretty good (for us!) the entire day. Part of that Mexican hurricane Opos mentioned, I think. Weather guessers suggest it will be with us two more days, then warm to hot and dry again...

The firefighters just got to mopping up about 31,500 acres that burned on the mountain a few miles from here. Then last Sunday we had another one about 2 miles away, but they knocked it down at about 100 acres with a DC-10 tanker. It's impressive watching the guys fly any of the tankers, doubly so with that one. And it's amazing the equipment that gets called in when several multi-million dollar houses with limited evacuation routes are directly in the path of a fire! By next week, there will probably be some other firebug playing with matches. It's gonna be a BAD fire season...

When we had the big fires in San Marcos and Carlsbad a year or so ago...they brought in the DC10 but could only fly it for a couple of runs as it needed a scheduled maintenance and got grounded for a couple of days..pretty impressive but sure would have helped had the fires cooperated and come when the "10" was no scheduled for down time..the chopper pilots do an incredible job...don't know if you saw the pictures of the vehicles on the freeway that were burning in the middle of the fires yesterday but they were swooping in really low and dropping whole loads of water on individual vehicles that were afire to keep it from spreading and causing carnage on those stranded cars and drivers...We are very lucky to have the dedicated fire fighters...just wish we could get our hands on the arsonists and that when they are caught that the courts put them away for life.

The big fire in San Marcos/Carlsbad with huge property loss was caused by some mentally messed up teen age girl...she set 2 or 3 smaller fires that all joined up..that same day there were something like 5 or 6 major fires going on in the same general area that all turned nasty...no lightning, so either arson or "natural causes" but I'll bet on arson.

Was quite brutal up here north of Seattle yesterday 95 with high humidity, dripping wet walking my dog after sun down last night, no rain in 3 months, lawns turned brown the first week or so in June, very unusual weather for around here but I'm enjoying it. :D

Vito - Forget Sandy Eggo... Come to Az! Down here in the Valley of the Sun probably ain't your dish, but up north along I-40 (Flagstaff, east & west) can be pretty nice. And you get the added benefit of living in a state where it's legal to be an American adult! ;)

Just to put it in perspective - I just finished digging a large hole (by hand) in caleche (Clay with the consistency of concrete) for a flagpole in 115 degree sunshine. You don't have to be crazy to live here, but it helps! ;)

Hi,

My sister and brother in law lived in Casa Grande for close to 10 years. My BIL had lots to say about that caleche, none of it good! He did figure out he wasn't quite as wimpy as he thought he was getting when they had to have a dry well drilled for their septic system, and even the machines had problems with that stuff!

When the job's done, I hope the sight of the flag flying up there makes up for the work, too. Not sure which of two I suspect you'll be flying, but hope you give both equal time. A fellow near me flies about five! Generally rotates 'em daily... ;)

My little brother always loved AZ up in the Prescott area; He said not TOO HOT in the Summer and NOT TOO COLD in the winter, plus there were trout streams around he where he could indulge in his favorite hobby of fishing.
When he passed away and was cremated, that's where his ashes got scattered was by those streams.

When I was a teenager, he was always a pain in the butt (7 years younger than me; Feb,'48- Feb, '41)) BUT as we both got older I did love him with all my heart; (sorry eyes are wet).

It's hot here in Virginia too. Today , with the heat index it was 107 at 17:00 hrs ,the air was so thick with humidity you could see it .

Vito, consider the Boise area. Was about 90 today but supposed to cool off over the next week. I'm from Alaska and thought the heat would kill me for sure but it's a "dry heat" as they say. really not that bad. I like it here. This is supposed to be the most popular city in the country for retirees.

Oh come on, what a bunch of weenies  I just spent a good part of my day off removing the selector cables off of my 5 speed VW Jetta. 112 degrees in the garage. So sorry if that offends, I hate the cold. I work in this everyday and actually sort of love it. (masochist). I know it sucks but it is what it is. Either sit in the house and whine or get out and do what needs to be done. Again, sorry for you cold weather guys. I will not get out if it is freezing or below, except I have a wood stove in the shop. OH, yes, modify your surroundings. YEA!. Watch what you ask for when it comes to weather.
