browsing in the backyard

spotted this lone turkey browsing in the back yard this morning, and now it is back for dinner. i stalked up fairly close to it, down behind a retaining wall and the picnic table.

She is probably a bred female and on her nest. Most states set up their turkey season so the majority of the breeding is done before the season opens. Hens can hold sperm for up to thirty days so once they are bred they can keep on laying eggs even if the boys get killed.
 
well, she has been here, basically all day, every day since we first spotted her. BUT! this morning she met my dog! hasn't been back all day. maybe she'll come back, maybe not.
