BRAND NEW 10/22 jambs at every third shot?

I just bought a Ruger 10/22, and after the first 100 rounds it jambed at every third shot.

The mechanism is turning the shell case 180 degrees and pinching it.

Gun shop says it is "quality of ammo"???

Well, kind of a disappointing day.

The first 100 rounds went fine, and the accuracy was fantastic.

After that, every THIRD shot jambed.

I tried three tyeps of ammo: Federal, CCI, and Blazer. All three didn;t solve the issue.

Someone at the range lubed the mechanism with RemOil-did not solve the issue.

I had cleaned and lubed the gun the night I bought it.

I called the gun store, and they said they have NEVER had a warranty call for a Ruger 10/22. They said it is my ammo.

What am I doing wrong here?

I'd be looking at the extractor and ejector for damage/malfunction. If it was working fine for 100 rds, then suddenly quit, something happened. It might just be a piece of debris that got into the wrong place. Take it apart and inspect those areas really well under magnification if necessary.

Thumbs up on this advice! I bought a new Ruger MkIII standard a month ago and was having problems right out of the box. I was going to buy a volquartsen extractor but upon closer examination of my extractor I noticed some debris stuck on the top side. I used a tiny flat head screw driver from a glasses kit to gently pull this thing out. It turned out to be a red piece of plastic about half the width of a pencil eraser jammed in there. Since removing it the gun works flawlessly. But it was doing the exact same thing as your rifle is doing. Take a close look at, it should also have play left and right. Mine did not before removing that plastic. I don't know how it got there, must have been overlooked during assembly.

I am using the factory 10 round magazine that came with the rifle.

I bought a small box of Remington Thunderbolt today; we will see how that does at the range next weekend.

Might want to buy or borrow a different magazine to make sure it is not just a bad magazine. Good luck. Ed

Bllccm... as I mentioned in the other post and eveled has said above... you need more than one magazine, just to make sure..

the one thing that this problem is not related to is ammo. forget that advise... and I would go back to the CCI and leave that thunderbolt stuff at home...

it sure sounds like a small hunk of brass shaving is stuck somewhere.... if you can't find it, I'd have someone real familiar with a 10/22 look at it and compare it to another.

Ok, my daughter and I went to the range today. I will try to keep the details, but also be brief.

I tried four different types of ammo, and two magazines. Both magazines were Ruger brand 10 shot 22lr.

First off, it is not the magazine. When I had a "every third" jam, it was with both magazines.

The jamming is ammo dependant. Here is what I tried, and the results:

Fresh from the gun shop CCI mini mags: never a jam for all 100 rounds
CCI mini mags purchased about two years ago: 1 jam for 100 rounds
Federal value pack: every third shot jammed
Remington Thunderbolt: 1 jam for 100 rounds

So, I guess my 10/22 prefers CCI minimags, or Thunderbolts. Kind of a shame since I have about 10,000 rounds of Federal Value.

I just had the same results from Federal in my 22/45 Lite. The pistol functions properly with CCI's. I had similar result with my new TD. No more Federal for me, CCI from now on.

I'm running Federal AutoMatch bulk pack with no issues now. After complete cleaning of the new MKIII and a 10/22 I bought 18 years ago and never fired, neither has had an issue after the first couple mags. In fact, been using up a bunch of 20yr old ammo from Winchester, Remington, Eley and PMC. They'll run anything I've put in them.

I really think that you should look into a new extractor. I replaced mine in both my MkII and my 10/22 with a VQ extractor, and haven't had an extraction/ejection issue in over 20k rounds between the two. It's a cheap part, especially considering you have so much bulk ammo.

The stock Ruger part is stamped. Stamping always leaves a rounded edge on one side. Depending on tool wear, the rounding may be worse on some extractors. The VQ part is EDM'd, which is a superior process that leaves nice sharp corners on both sides of the part.

I shoot 99% federal bulk, and I never ever have issues.

Just bought a 10/22 Takedown & put 100 rounds of CCI mini-mag thru it.
No issues at all. I'll be trying some (cheaper) Thunderbolt next.

Almost all failures to eject (FTE) problems are extractor related. If it is n older rifle, likely needs cleaning. If a new rifle it likely needs to have the extractor fit to the bolt.

With the bolt in hand, slide a cartridge up under the extractor. You should see the extractor cam out as the rim goes under the extractor. The extractor must hold the spent case tight to the bolt face until the case hits the ejector and gets kicked out of the action.

If your extractor does not have the preload needed to hold the case to the bolt face you need to fit your extractor.

Just put a Volquartson extractor in it and start shooting!

I echo on the extractor. I ran into issues a few years back and replaced the OEM with a Volquartsen. After you strip the rifle down, put the two extractors side by side. Tool steel Volquartsen has a nice crisp edge.

It really is an easy fix, and will most likely get rid of your issue.

One more vote for extractor repair or replacement. Tolerance stackup in the factory ammo is probably showing that your extractor is marginal. My old faithful 10/22 eats almost every cheap piece of crap .22 I put in it.

Only a hundred rounds put thru my recently purchased 10/22 TD. No problems so far so should I wait or replace the extractor ?
