I have arthritis and have been dealing with it since I was in college. For at least the past twenty years, I've been taking two Aleve every morning.

Recently, a coworker commented that he couldn't take Aleve because his BP is high. Hmmmm . . . I'm on BP meds and I take Aleve. I looked it up and sure 'nuff, the interwebs say don't take Aleve if you have high BP.

Had an appointment with my cardiologist yesterday and asked him. He says, "Stay away from Aleve or Motrin. Why?" I tell him that I take two a day and he says, "I didn't know that." Really? It's in my chart. Every visit I give a list of what I take every day.

On top of that, my PCP never said a thing. Neither did my endocrinologist. Maybe everyone figured that it was someone else's call.

So no more Aleve, just Tylenol. My joints are aching.
 
Yes Tylenol or Acetaminophen are both okay. I had an issue with an aspirin allergic reaction & was told to stay away from NSAIDS (Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). I looked it up & side effects include increased blood pressure. I had to look up what to stay away from & there's quite a list of them. Most of them I've never heard of. So I stick with the 2 I mentioned.
 
I have arthritis very bad in my ankles. Almost bone on bone. I take an extra strength BC power (1000mg aspirin plus some caffeine). The Nsaids and acetaminophens are very hard on the liver. The BC powders are taken after something to eat. The powder is dissipated and not sitting in one place which avoids the stomach issues with aspirin. I do take advantage of the something to eat and that causes my waistline to expand.

Acetaminophen is hell on the liver. I won't touch the stuff.

Aleve is hell on the kidneys. I won't touch the stuff.

My former wife has arthritis in her shoulder, pretty bad. He doctor told her to ease up on the Aleve.

If I have pain I will take 1 advil along with a couple aspirin, but I prefer to address my arthritis and joint issues with daily supplements and avoid NSAIDs altogether.
 
My cardiologist told me about aleve and its effects on blood pressure and even went in to how and why. He also told me living in pain isn’t the way to live. My problem eased up and now I just use it occasionally.

Reading the warnings, it happens with over dose & prolonged usage. Aspirin is an NSAID & causes high blood pressure. In short look up the side effects of any over the counter drugs & even prescribed drugs. Unless you have a reaction dr.s don't know if you're one of the people who will exhibit the side effects. Lets be careful out there.

I wish my cardologist, or my GP, or my endocrinologist had said something. I'm kinda frosted that I talk to these "health care professionals" on a regular basis and no one saw fit to mention it.

As for aspirin "Overall, aspirin hasn’t been found to consistently lower blood pressure. But some research shows that low-dose aspirin (81 mg per day) may lower blood pressure when it’s taken before bedtime. Researchers aren't exactly sure why this occurs, but it might be because certain blood pressure-raising hormones are more active overnight. "

For the record, my liver function and kidney function are all good.

I had bone on bone in my knee for years and was on BP medication and Aleve was the only thing that helped with the pain. My PCP was fully aware but didn’t tell me to not take it and he eventually prescribed Meloxicam which is also an NSAID, kinda like souped up Aleve which got me through until my knee replacement 18 months ago and now I rarely take any pain meds. I have an extremely thorough blood panel exam every 6 months and it has never shown any signs of liver or kidney issues. My BP was and still is consistently 120/70 before and after the surgery, although now I have been diagnosed with high blood sugar and have been prescribed Metformin 😠 not sure if it’s related but at least I don’t have to take the pain meds anymore.
 
Interestingly my doc recently told me not to take NSAIDs. He had even prescribed them in the past. I wonder if this is something fairly new. Tylenol works somewhat for joint/back pain. There are some other things out there like Gabapentin which didn't work for me. He also tried Cymbalta. That worked, but the side effects weren't worth it.

Speaking of Cymbalta, it's a drug for depression. You know the thing that causes folks to commit suicide. We it says right in the paperwork, "might cause suicidal thoughts or actions". No thoughts of suicide, but it made it difficult to concentrate and focus. If I wanted to be a zombie I'd take an opioid.
 
I am allergic to aspirin. Tylenol works for some things, advil for others. Aleve, not so much.
As for long term side effects, well, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.
Edit: I figure pain makes my blood pressure go up anyway so I'd rather have no pain.
 
Aleve recommends you take Aleve no more than 10 days in a row.

They're all bad for you in one way or another. My mom is in stage 4 kidney failure so I stay away from Tylenol more than the others but I rarely take anything out of concern.
 
My Ortho, Cardio, and PCP all advised me against Aleve. They are all under the same medical group Wellspan. So they review my meds every visit and ensure it all plays nice together. Cardio has me on 81 Baby Aspirin and 40 Atorvastatin. PCP has me on stuff I can't spell or pronounce and don't feel like getting up to walk to the pill dispenser and read the bottles at the moment. Years back my Ortho put me on Celebrex 200MG twice a day. Even after my knee replacement my back surgeon kept me on it. My Cancer Doc (Urologist) reviews it also and he's good with it. He and other check my blood every 6 months. The cocktail they created seems to have worked for my blood pressure as I was typically very high and now average 130. They all pretty much say the meds are one thing but the best thing would be to lose some more weight and lay off the beer and bourbon....I've cut back considerably on beer and bourbon, and watch my diet...but exercise is difficult when you walk with legs that move like they are frozen.

You never think meds are working until you stop taking them. A couple years ago before my knee replacement I had to stop taking the meds. No biggy I said as I felt they didn't do anything anyway.....holy crap was I wrong. The last two surgeries I've had I dreaded when I had to stop taking the meds prior to cutting time.

That's the point of my original post. I see these highly trained professionals and no one said a thing for decades.

I stopped taking Aleve and my joints are letting me know.
 
I always read the warnings on prescriptions and pay attention to the labels of the over the counter products I use.
Partially because my dad was a pharmacist and because of an issue I had when an over the counter supplement I used changed it formula and that caused me to start having anxiety issues.
My view is like most everything in life, I'm responsible for my life.

I went to a cardiologist just recently; went just bec. I'm 81 and wanted to see how things were going with my heart (no symptoms). She prescribed two tests: a nuclear stress test and an echo cardiogram. When she gave the results via telecon to my wife, she only mentioned the echo; so my wife asked about the nuclear test and she obviously didn't have the result so she hemmed-hawed and finally said 'oh, yes' it's "normal". She then scheduled a (revenue producing) "follow-up" which I attended just this past week. Apparently, the 'revenue protocol' attempts to schedule regular 'follow ups' which in our area run MANY DOLLARS per visit (yes, I have Medicare and an expensive Supplemental policy). So, I went in and they wanted to do an EKG which I refused. I told the nurse that I was there to follow-up on the dr. who obviously had not seen my nuclear stress test that she said was "normal". The nurse explained that I had to sign a paper to allow the hospital to transfer the results to my chart with the doctor's group (appears the right hand doesn't know the left hand very well; the hospital is across the street from the "Group"). I signed the paper. Fifteen minutes go by and the doctor comes in (bright/young girl). I told her that I wanted to get the results of my two tests. She said that she believes that she called me with them last month and that my echo was "normal". I asked her about my nuclear test which she had prescribed. She fumbled a bit on the computer screen and said it was "normal". I told her that "normal" for an 81 yr. old is not saying much; and I asked her if my heart was HEALTHY; she said yes. We exchanged pleasantries and she said that she would see me in 6 months for a follow-up. I told her that I don't do follow-ups; especially since I'm "normal". She said that it would be smart to book the appointment since it's almost impossible to get an appointment when needed these days. I told her that I really didn't trust the 'system' anymore because it's become more of an accounting organizaton than a medical one. She then said: "you mean you don't trust ME?". I replied: "Dr., I don't even KNOW you.". MORAL : Yaworski, they NEVER read the charts with any committment to excellence, the accountants hold them to 15 minutes per revenue producing patient.
BTW, I consume massive quantities of Tylenol and Advil (together) when I have pain. BUT, I've found that the ULTIMATE prescription to alleviate pain is (wait for it):
1) reduce sugar intake to as close to nothing as possible without being a fanatic;
2) as part of #1; absolutely no alcoholic beverages (yes I was always an occassional wine and liquor drinker).
Trust me.... take your Tylenol & Advil; stay off alcohol.. all my annual tests have always been PERFECT (at least that's what my GP tells me :-))))))

One Jan 6, 2026 I ended up in the ER, severely dehydrated and with a BP of 99/40. Breathing was extremely difficult. When I saw my heart doc after getting out of the hospital a few days later, he said to drop all BP meds except one andit was 10 MG daily. I also saw my PCP a few days later and he says drop that med to 5 MG daily by cutting the pills in half. I think I lost my temper just a bit.In no uncertain terms I said something to the effect of, " Why don't you and doctor X get together and decide what in hell the proper dosage should be?"

The biggest part of the problem that sent me to hospital was between the two docs I was on four BP meds. Now it's down to two. The first of the two really did nothing and the second with the full 10 MG dose has me down to 114/70. I tried cutting the pill in half but all the cutter did was crumble the pill. I guess I'll just stick with the 10MG and watch for that problem.

The most notable symptom id I can't breathe. Walk about ten to twelve feet and fight for air. No matter how hard I tried, it seemed that no air was even reaching my lungs. Not a very good feeling.

In August of last year I was hospitalized with chest pains that I thought might have been a heart attack.
The problem was a hole in my stomach lining from Naprosyn aka Aleve. Now I am using extra strength Acetaminophen aka Tylenol as well as Gabapentin which is prescribed for neuropathy. The neuropathy is courtesy of chemo in 2017.
 
Folks often complain about large medical organizations. But one of the things I like is all of my records are available to all of the doctors I see.
One of their procedures is that during intake, vitals and such the RN reviews your meds. If the doctor decides to prescribe something, he too reviews your meds.

While Tylenol works great to enhance other painkillers, it's almost worthless on it's own. Find out if you can take Meloxicam, which is pretty much designed for Arthritis. I would check with a doctor, not the internet.
 
I had been taking Aleve for a couple years alternating with ibuprofen (I be broken) due to my hip coming apart.

Before surgery I had to stop for a couple weeks. Learned the stuff worked better than I thought, and I didn’t have much of a BP problem after all.
 
I have both Rheumatoid Arthritis and Osteoarthritis treated with opioids for 25 years, till everyone wanted it for a high. Doctors stopped prescribing it and said use Acetaminophen, all that happened was no withdraws just joint pain and muscle spaziums. With my heart problems they said no Aleve ever. Was taking Gabapentin but was taken off as Ortho doc said it could increase chance of Alzheimer's.

Tylenol will work well for most folks. Spent 14 years as a orthopedic nurse with knee and hip replacemnt patients. When the surgeon said to give tylenol first (1000 MG) for pain and as a scheduled pain med, I thought he was nuts and told him so, But I did it, found that most patients could get along with just the tylenol on it's own. We gave 1000 MG every six hours (no more that 4 grams a day total. We would give oxycodone for breakthrough pain. So want oxycodone no matter what.
 
I find it a bit amazing how many folks here seem surprised that their body doesn't react well to consuming pharmaceutical chemicals.

The "medical experts" are quick to point out the dangers of alcohol to your liver, but strangely silent about the effects of their prescription drugs. The more drugs you take, the more side effects you will experience, to which your "doctor" will prescribe more drugs to combat. It is a never ending cycle, only to make shareholders wealthy.

It will be interesting to see what happens in 10 years to all the people who are injecting themselves with chemicals so they can lose weight.

Long forgotten is the "let thy food be thy medicine..." of Hypocrites. Now it is just hypocrisy...

In medical school, on average, less than a week out of many years of "education" is dedicated to nutrition and food.

Y'all just keep letting big pharma kill you....slowly....as they get richer.... 🤷‍♂️
