Because I'm old-school and resist change (or just lazy  ) I've never used a Bore Snake. Well ...... today I was given one as an early Christmas gift. It's for the "22/223/556" caliber.

Any helpful hints? Tricks of the trade" Do's or don'ts?

How do you like yours? Or why don't you like them? How often do you wash yours?

I own several bore snakes. They are an additional tool in my cleaning assortment. I tend to use them when I want a quick bore cleaning, and know I can't sit down & do a serious deep cleaning. I apply a bit of bore cleaner to the snake ahead of the bristles, pass it through a couple of times & know it's had a bit of cleaning.

I use them almost exclusively. Once in a while I will pull one of my rifles out and use my rod and brush and patches, and basically get clean patches from the get go.

My brother and I made them for our shotguns more than 40 years ago with clothes line and old t-shirts cut to size. OH why didn't we market this. lol

I was shooting at a friend's home range and he wanted me to run his bore snake through the barrel of the rifle I was shooting, I asked him if he was sure about this and he replied in the affirmative. I looked at that little string that you pull it through with and I really didn't want to use it but didn't want to insult Jerry so I proceeded to pull on that little string and when I met hard resistance I stopped and asked him if that was normal and he told me to not worry about it just pull harder and it would come through. I pulled harder and yep the string broke off and we tusseled with that barrel for the longest time and finally removed that snake from my barrel. I hear good things about them but you won't catch me using one again.

I have never had a problem with my bore snakes but mine are fairly new. Being made of synthetic material, the lube / solvent used, should be checked for compatability. I use only Balistoll on mine. Balistoll is a cleaner/ lube and presurvitive
All in one.

I use them often, but not exclusively. At the range, or anytime I want to swab the barrel, I pull it thru a couple times.

But when I'm doing a serious cleaning, I still use rods, and patches and brushes. But I still finish with the bore snake.

I don't use any 21st century chemicals or lubricants. Hoppes #9 and old school gun oil, and I've never had any adverse effects on the Bore Snake.

WAYNO.

I have them for all my calibers.

The only issue I have is that my .22 cal one is *extremely* tight in the bore of my AR556. Even with it so soaked with CLP, I need to wrap the cord around a stick and pull like heck to get it through.

None of my others are nearly so tight.

Aqualung

I use 'em all the time. Dust and grit get into the barrel anytime you're the outside storage, especially with shotguns, so I pull the boresnake through a few times a day when out. Even with high-velocity stuff, the boresnake & copies ensure fouling never gets a chance to build up. Try oversize (243 in a 22, 32/8mm in a 30 cal, etc) if you're shooting lead or a lot of hot-stepping bullets.
