Blackhawk question?

Hi, I just bought this Blackhawk .45 covertible and was wondering if anyone has seen anything like this? Is it common? I have been buying Rugers for over 50 yrs and never had a single problem. This is an aluminum grip frame so I guess I could fit it and polish the whole thing or replace it with a Super B/H grip. It is about .035 to .040 higher than the frame. New model with lock.

I have only been buying Rugers for about 35 years, but I have not had one like that. If you bought it NEW and are SURE no one has changed the grip frame, I would send that puppy back to Ruger and have them fix it. To me, that is not acceptable.

Looks like someone switched gripframes. If it is new you should call Ruger and ask them to fix it (and include free shipping both ways.)

Tellico, welcome to the Forum, yes, over the years we have seen this anomoly,all too often, and no it should NOT be that way BUT they did and do come out,one of the reasons some folks have questioned" 'QC'?? over the years...have seen much worse too.............give them a call, or e-mail the picture to their web site, they will stand behind and correct it....no , it is NOT acceptible....................yes, some folks just don;t care and let it be,oh well,life is full of options & crossroads.........

Because it is an aluminum gripframe they are painted or anodized before they are assembled. They don't have a chance to fit the gripframe to the gun as with the steel gripframes. It doesn't match-up very well there but that is not uncommon. In my experience, which isn't a whole lot compared to some here, Rugers are seldom perfect. 8) 8)

Thanks, yes the gun is new. I think I will buy a stainless Super B/H grip frame as this skinny one doesn't fit my hand anyway. Ruger said I could send it in for evaluation. ( whatever that means?) I checked and I bought my first Ruger in1950. I wish I had it now. A .22 auto with Red Pheonix, and my first single action in 1954, a single six. In 1962 I had a new 22-22mag convertible that I put a CCI maxi mag hollow point in my left knee with. I also had a model 77 rifle in 257 Roberts with a 4 digit serial#. But I digress, sorry.

When you send it in make sure you tell them which Super Blackhawk gripframe you want. There are 3 different kinds: XR3red, dragoon, and Hunter. The dragoon and Hunter gripframes are larger.

Beware that if you send it in to Ruger, they may just send it back to you saying it is within specs since as was said, they don't fit the aluminum grip frames to the cylinder frames anyway.

They also probably won't put a SBH grip frame on the gun since they don't turn guns into something that was not an original cataloged item. Their shop is a "repair" shop, not a "custom" shop.

Be sure you ask them if they will do what you want before sending the gun to them.

He did a little custom work to the gun including stripping the paint off the gripframe and polishing the aluminum. Doesn't really apply here. An easier fix for the situation above would be to file off the offending tips and paint the shiny spots with flat black Rustoleum paint, or similar. 8) 8)

I like the two tone look and have done the same thing to my 45 Blackhawk, back in the 70's.
Don't like the orange insert but may have to do that one of these days in my eyesight gets much worse.

You'd love how it feels and the improved recoil damping with a steel Grip frame and ejector rod housing. You don't have to go to a Super BLHK to get a steel grip frame. You could order a Vaquero (not New Vaquero) to get the same size as the one you have in stainless steel or carbon steel that can be blued. Which ever grip frame you get you'll need to get the hammer spring and strut that goes with it because neither would have the internal lock..

+1 on the steel grip frame and while you are at it send it over to Cary for some functional and beautiful grips. Those skinny cheese graters will beat you and rub the hide off your hand.
