Well, I put on a mess of black-eyed peas about 4:45 PM. They got to boiling at 5 and then I turned the heat down to just below medium (electric stove.) I used a nice big hog jowl for seasoning, plus some black pepper. They was done at 8:45 and I had a small bowl.

Tomorrow, I'll cook up some collards and a skillet of Martha White's Hot Rize cornbeard, using real buttermilk. Of course, there will be some pot likker too.

YUM!

My New England raised wife , after being married to me for over 40 years, still just doesn't understand that you have to start the New Year with black eye peas. I have some but she still won't eat them. But then she doesn't like grits or fried okra either.

Hi,

Black eyed peas, sauerkraut, menudo: those three "good luck" foods pretty well cover the cultural makeup among my family and friends.

What others do you guys enjoy to start the year on a lucky note? Happy New Year, all!

Wife is planning on black eyed peas, turnip greens and cornbread for us. And of course a tall glass of sweet milk.

It will be cooked cabbage here. W/plenty of Durkees Red Hot sauce. Smoked sausage & taters out of the same pot for sides.

Happy new year & new decade Y'all!

Have you considered going to your pastor for counselling?

Ham, collards, black eyed peas, potato salad, green beans, and homemade biscuits are on the menu for our annual family New Year's feast tonight. Leftovers tomorrow will be just as good. *s*

Where’s the meat?
gramps, who had sausage balls for breakfast

Will NOT even touch the second line although I know there are some jokes to be had. :D :D :D :D

Loaded Round, spoken like a good Pennsylvanian. My house, roasted pork loin (with apple chutney), sauerkraut, mashed potatoes, corn, fresh dinner rolls.

Frank, Jackie growing up on a ranch in NW Colorado, had never heard of pork/sauerkraut for New Years dinner. I don't think she ever heard of sauerkraut. Our first New Years together she asked, "What do you want for New Years dinner?". I replied, "What do you mean, we're having pork and sauerkraut, it's the only thing you have on New Years Day." For the last 47 years (for her), 66 years for me, I/we have had pork and sauerkraut.

Such a mild day I grilled/smoked sausage on Jan. 1. Not something I usually want to do this time of year. We worked in another first for the year too.
