Over the past few days I have rewatched a couple of really superb movies separated in time by a generation:
To Kill a Mockingbird
And
Schindler's List.
Incredible filmmaking. And, l think much better for being in black and white.
Besides Young Frankenstein, any others?

The Best Years of Our Lives

Filmed in 1946 just after WWII about soldiers coming home from the war.

The soldiers had a much different civilian life than in the military. The high ranking commander was a soda jerk that didn't want to come back to his old job but had no other choice.

The private was actually a bank executive making the ungodly sum of $12,000 a year. Who would need so much money? (well it was a lot back then)

Sean Connery's first credited film role was in "Hell Drivers" in 1957 and he was in "Darby O'Gill and the Little People" in 1959, both long before "The Longest Day".

One of my favorites and possible the second most often watched in my collection of "monster" movies. The most favorite of that genre being Monster from Piedras Blancas. Though my favorite B&W movie is Panic in the Year Zero with Ray Milland, Jean Hagen and Frankie Avalon.

Yeah, Them (1954) was "one of the first of the 1950s "nuclear monster" movies, and the first with big bugs as the threat." My very first such theater film. :eek: :love:

Never cared for Welles as an actor or director. I watch movies to be entertained and his stuff is just ponderous, not entertaining. YMMV.

Fred was the Captain with the high living wife that had been a soda jerk before the war.

Al was the Tech Sergeant who was a bank executive.

Homer was the Machinist's Mate 2nd Class with no hands.

If a movie is telling a good story, and is well written, acted and directed, being black and white does not detract from the experience. In fact, a few minutes into watching the movie and the viewer doesn't even think about it being without color. But a poorly done movie in black and white is still just a poorly done movie.

The first date that I ever had with my wife of now almost 50 years was to see "Dr. Strangelove", and I doubt that had it been in color it would have been as good as it was. Sometimes color is distracting.

I agree about the noir, one of our favorites is The Night Of The Hunter. Must be B&W, color would have ruined the light/dark good vs evil aspects of Harry Powell and Rachel Cooper conflict highlighting the differences so sharply.
