In our neighborhood a guy was having several large oak trees taken down and here was the largest
one that measured 5 ft in diameter at about 3 ft from the ground where this slice was taken.
Using some calculators we figured 200 yrs. old or possibly more!
Well it will sure cut down on his leaf raking and gutter cleaning!!

There was a lot of Civil War action around our area and a small fort along the banks of the river just
thru the woods behind where I was standing. So if only that tree could tell some stories!

Always sad to see one of those old timers come down.........but since it is, I would love to have a 5 or 10 foot section of that trunk......

Yes I thought the same and one of the crew told me if you can move it .. it's yours.
Way too much work for little ol' me!

I bet when it was young it watched George Washington march by.

That's close! French soldiers did shell the British in the city down the hill from us in 1781.

I have one about that size that died, and the old man that we bought the house from said it was planted in 1956.
It is a Live oak,and I do have several more that size and larger that are still living.
It is amazing how big they can get with the right soil and plenty of water.

Mus408, did you watch them take it down? The neighbor and I had a party. Lots of beer :)

Had this one taken down in 2012. It was 90' tall. I hated that tree, and if it ever fell it would have crushed my shack. It was a Red Oak, or something like it. The leaves fell 12 months a year clogging my gutters. If you look in the woods this time of year and see all the brown leaves still on an oak, that's what this was.

It was amazing watching the crew take it down. Both houses have overhead utilities and they dropped everything with extreme precision  When I moved into this house in Jan. 1981 it was too small for a kid to climb. It would have been great if it had been in a field somewhere. It was before this became a subdivision.

I always hate to see an old oak that big come down. I like seeing them.

The crew was there for 2 days taking 3 trees down. They had all kinds of equipment but the lone guy in the tall cherry picker with the BIG saw was who I was watching when I would get by there walking the dog.
I happened to see him cutting a piece of the top of the trunk 50 ft. up there and trying to rock or push it off. That cherry picker was really rocking but the section soon fell free and landed with a loud thud!

Yeah there was always a small gathering of neighbors hanging around.

I've lived here 35 yrs. and it was a huge tree when I moved in the neighborhood.
The subdivision was farm land and woods before 1960 and luckily we still have a good chunk of the woods left which the city owns now.

Growing up we had an old oak tree in the back yard - HUGE! After it finally died and started dropping limbs my parents hired a crew to take it down. One of the workers took a good look at it and claimed, "I bet Injuns clumb that tree". We still get a laugh.

Years ago we lost an elm tree in our front yard. That summer our electric bill increased by an average of $10 a month!

A recent YouTube video showed an old oak tree in England that was blown down by a storm. In the exposed root system were human bones. Further search showed the remaining skeletal remains buried below.

Analysis of the bones indicated burial around 1050 A.D. And the bones showed what was likely knife wounds. And a church was near that vicinity at that time.

Wonder what lies beneath my backyard oak tree. I've often said Indians may have camped under it.

Sad to see. I have a soft spot for old trees like that oak. Unless the tree presented some sort of hazard, I would let it stand.
Agree! We have quite a few very large oak trees on our property, mostly at the top of a slope that leads to a "wet weather creek". Any number of them have large dead branches that we just let lay when they break off. No danger to the yard or house. Over time they renourish the soil so that young trees will sprout up. Seems that's the way nature intended

As much as I like big old oak trees, having one too close to the house can really be nasty if acorns are covering your deck and leaves are clogging the gutters. I’ve seen too many large trees come down and nearly split a house in two. A relative nearly lost his life and his dog lost two toes when a big old tree came down. A lot of oaks in MD have been getting a wasting disease that nobody knows how to cure.

The tree was there first...

If it's white oak, you can sell it to one of the bourbon distilleries in Kentucky or TN for barrels. :) They're always looking for good barrel wood.
