I was in my local gun shop today and saw that a Blackhawk 4 5/8" had been taken in trade. Now, I was not aware that at one time the Blackhawk came in 38 cal with another cylinder for 357. Do I not understand that a 38 can be shot out of a 357 cylinder? What purpose does this serve and if in fact this was a normal production with both cylinders. Please help with any info.

Never heard of a .38 caliber only cylinder for a BH. Yes you can shoot 38 specials from a 357 magnum.

It is possible somebody had a 38special cylinder made up for target shooting, but very unlikely. The gun is probably a Blackhawk convertible in 357mag/9mm. :D :D

Stumps, I am curious about this one. What caliber is the gun marked? The OAL of a 9mm case is .75 (I think), but in a revolver you have to deduct a little bit for the rim sticking out the back. Anyway, can you measure the chamber length of the alledged 38 cylinder? Those are 1.155 according to SAAMI. Again, you would deduct for rim stickout. But if it is over an inch, it probably couldn't be a 9mm. Whatever you find out, let us know.

I have a Blackhawk 357/9mm convertable. I'm pretty sure that is what you are seeing. Not 100% but never heard of someone haveing a cylnder made just for 38 but it could happen. Or the counter person could be misinformed. On the 357/9mm convertable both cylnders are the same length (to the naked eye). The 9mm headspaces on the throat of the cartridge due to 9mm being rimless. You do see brass at the base of the cylnder is loaded in the gun.

U are right. I was able to look at the BH myself and it is a 38/357 w/ a 9mm cylinder. That's is what I get listening to someone else without looking at it my self. Now, I would consider the gun to be 90% and classified as a shooter. What would be a fair market value? (The local gun shop has a price tag of $295.00)
Thanks again and sorry of the confusion. It did make an interesting conversion topic.

NIB Blackhawk Convertibles around where I live go between $485-$540. $295 for a used Convertible seems like a real fair price to me...........................

I would jump on it for that price. I am casually looking for another in 4 5/8" You won't wear it out.
