Yellowstone Worker Learns Hard Way What Happens When Bear Spray Explodes In Car

A worker at Yellowstone National Park learned the hard way this past week what happens when a can of bear spray explodes in your car, blowing through the windshield and launching itself more than 200 feet.

The first story,, can explodes in a hot car,, not surprising. But that'll be a life long story.

The second one,, the video of the guy getting sprayed. I understand why he did it. Apparently he works for a prison system,, and wanted to know if he had to use the spray on an attacking inmate,, would it work. Kinda like trying out self defense ammo on a critter before betting your life on it.
And while a bit of an extreme thing to do,, I can accept his reasoning.

Reminded me of when the Army had us all do our gas chamber trip.

Not just military - when I lived in California several decades ago, law enforcement cadets got introduced to tear gas in a bunker down the road from me, on a former air force base.

Amazing what some guys will do for their employer!

Cholo I'm guessing a city kid. One who never burned the trash in a barrel like we did growing up. Dad only had to warn you about once on the danger of aerosol cans and heat.

When I went through basic we had to go through the CS then walked through the chlorine chamber. That stuff was awful and they stopped it right after we were there.

The spray has of course its oleoresin capsicum (pepper oil) BUT read this it's important. It also has plain old propellant. That is what carries the pepper. Propellent won't cause any stopping ability, the pepper oil does. The propellant is more dense at close range and less at longer range. That test as seen, the guy got a lot more or the propellant and less pepper. For better effectiveness. The test should have been at greater distance and spray more time.
Notice how the guy standing off to the side said he was getting affects. The target guy was saying it's not bad, the guy to the side was coughing. The guy off to the side was getting a more solid dose.
If you ever need to use pepper spray on man or beast. Do not aim at the face or head. Aim above, it will fall into their head/face/ body. Sweep the hand left and right to create a cloud of spray the target will come through if it continues. Back up, so you don't get into the drifting cloud. That was a dumb, poorly executed test.

I would have been afraid of it damaging my eyes. I would not do that.

I also did the gas chamber, way back when. And it was truly awful. Unlike this guy, we could not even speak, afterwards.

Later, we were exposed to CS grenades, and it was nothing like the first gas chamber.

Did the CS gas thing in boot camp in the early 80's. They gave us a class on the subject then we donned masks and walked into the chamber. Air in there was perfectly clear and we all were masked up including the instructor all us boots were wondering when he was going to fill the room with the stuff. He says ok off masks and figured he was going to light it and we'd have to quickly Don them. Well, one breathe and it was game on, as a whole we all made a mad dash for the exit. Coughing, gagging, copious amounts of tears, phlegm poured out of skulls. It was pandemonium trying to get the hell out. If anyone tells you they can be in a room and grit their way through it without a mask they are full of BS and or ignorance. It ain't happening.

I went though basically the same thing, although we didn't get to make a mad dash for the door. We had to stand their maskless while the masked instructor gave a speech on the gas.
