Sometimes it seems like there are more bears around than deer. Here's a couple of recent pics.

One of me in grad school: Taken in a school yard in Pasadena:

After I retired, my ex-boss took a position in Anchorage supervising Marine Mammals (i.e. polar bears), then took a position supervising Marine Mammals for National Marine Fisheries. She lives in Wasilla, AK. They have a neighborhood "telegraph" for when there is a bear or moose in the neighborhood so that they can arrange carpools for school! The children undergo bear avoidance training & drills in elementary school! Sometime in the next few days I'm sorting my bear slides from grad school and will have them transferred to a thumb drive. I'll start a separate thread of mine and Sierra's "urban" bear pics when I get them back.

I was ASKED to apply for a position as Deputy Supervisor of Arctic National Wildlife Refuge by the Regional Director of Refuges. It was a position where you took a shotgun with you when you went outside for a smoke! But I was 65-66 yo. and too old to spend 6 months above the Arctic Circle and 6 months in Anchorage.

Several weeks ago i had one of our VT "shy" black bears assist me in unloading my groceries from the back of my pickem-up truck.
I took two bags in the house and when I came back there was a yearling standing up and browsing the rest of my stash. Furthermore he/she chuffed me when i yelled at it. They are getting bolder here. This time it took gunfire to drive them away. I'm doing everything I can not to attract them as I cannot run away (81) but, I'm afraid one of these times it will end poorly for one of us. He even tore the laundry off the line on my front porch one time ????? On top of my woodpile (probably heard some critter living in there) and peering in the window at me (NOT a telephoto!). Not afraid of me in the least but, unlike that chucklehead in Alaska, I don't think they are my friends. And you can keep your spray and horns, I'll keep my OM Blackhawk wherever I go.... especially bringing in laundry.

We seem to have plenty of water this year as we have had 9.5 (roughly) inches of rain so far with about 4.5inches being the normal for this time of year. The reason I mentioned this is during some of our very dry years with little rain, bears have been known to come into town and appropriate people's swimming pools. On a few years during the drought finding a bear in your pool must have been a bit of a shocker. We always wanted a pool but just never did get around to having one built. Game and Fish would come out and tranquilize the beat and take it back up into the local mountains.

These are taken from a trail cam on property I just bought in Montana

@BearBiologist can you settle a bet between me and the wife? Blacks or Grizzly?
"Blacks". In SoCal almost all are cinnamon colored. Nose is too "long", face not "dished", claws curved and not straight, ears not rounded.

FYI, if anyone is curious, Montana has a bear ID online training and test. I used to require my bios to take and pass it before I would certify them to carry bear spray (No real reason, I just thought it was a "good idea").

You don’t need no steenking badgers..!

They use the Diamond formation in packs just before they kill, good thing your camera missed the slaughter.😏

At 11 years old, my now deceased Airedale killed a badger in our pasture.
It was a $400.00 vet bill.
My dog shoulda had a .450 Bushmaster…..it would have evened things up a bit.

My dad and I made the mistake of stopping the chevy next to a badger hole... The tire replacement was expensive enough, we left the tears in the quarter panel. They are some vicious little badgers.

Wish I had em in my neck of the woods. They sure make for a nice mount in a den. Yeah heard they are nasty critters.

Now this young fella really did some traveling to get to my neighborhood. Must have followed streams and drainage ditches all the way up from the Dismal swamp.

If they getting in my groceries, they are going to become Groceries! Season or Not!

This has been the worst year for bears at my place. Always had them Spring and Fall.....but it has been non stop all Summer. Started in Fall. Typical visits/damage. Then Spring was an unusual amount of visits/damage. Bird feeders were only put out at day time. Then they got them when I was at work. So then only when we were home....but a couple weeks ago bear came right up on deck to get the feeder, day time, with sliding glass door open and us only feet away.....it didn't care. Everyone has for the most part "Bear Proofed" themselves. Now, trash days are a buffet for them...... everyone's cans placed out at end of drives with straps and whatever to secure them....in the am when I drive up the road they are destroyed....I live in a very rural area. All the different Borough and Valley "neighborhoods" have increased with complaints.

My upper/lower and side deck damage has been extensive. Patio furniture has been punctured. Grills/smokers have been wrecked.....found a grill spatula in my front yard licked clean this past weekend....it's been a crazy year for bears.

Yearling dispersing & looking for a new home. Time of year that Momma's got a new boyfriend who likely chased him off! We caught one sub-adult who had twin incisions, about 3" long and an inch deep about 4-5 inches above the base of his tale. Females should have mated in late June - early July but won't implant the embryos until mid-late September IF she has enough body fat!.

What school? I used to live in Pasadena.

There was a bear wandering around the area here last week and people have been cautioned not to feed it or try to approach it. I work with a dingleberry who intentionally feeds deer and raccoons and put extra out incase the bear stops by. He said that he wants to pet the bear and I believe he is stupid enough to try.
