Good morning
Out walking my Lab around 5am this morning. Damn near stepped right on a20" copperhead. Damn thing was 1" around at his widest part. Seems to be a good crop of them this year. Lucky my dog did not see him. Got a hoe and dispatched him..
Y'all be careful out there.
Wilbur

Yep,, they are a bit active right now.
In NC,, with the wetter season, combined with our heat,,, many of them move to places where the conditions are better. Near houses where drainage is good, combined with the many shady spots to hide prey,,, is ideal.

Glad you got him first!

My wife said if my condition improves that we may take another trip to GSMNP. I love it there, but so do the snakes. I love to try to act like I remember how to fly fish for trout, altho I generally use an UL spinning outfit. Crawling on the rocks is always iffy. The last time we were walking in downtown Gatlinburg I was staring at the water that runs through town. We were on the bridge that leads to the aquarium. I looked and under the water was a BIG snake swimming upstream. I was amazed. The critters are everywhere!

Since a huge King Snake took up residence around my barn, I haven't seen a Copperhead for several years. Before then I'd kill 5 or 6 Copperheads every year. Got to love those King Snakes!

Used to find or see about one a week near my house... but this year has been pretty clear.... not sure why... we do have one or two rat (possibly one is a king) snakes at our house.... not sure... or hate to say it could be the 3 or 4 neighbors that have the mosquito squad come once a month to kill anything in the bushes around....

friend of ours owns White Mule small batch distillery near Purdy Missouri. Limestone shelf rock country. His whole place has been crawling with copperheads the last few days of hot sticky weather. He has a 4yr old daughter who has been shown what they look like, she is fearless and runs around the whole place with all the adults in her life telling her to watch out for copperheads constantly.

I don't know much about snakes.. Well, I dated a few over the years.. But that's besides the point.. Anyway, Why is the king snake such a big deal? Does it eat the copperhead? Or just chases them off?

And if it eats them, doesn't it die from the poison? :?:

Yes, constrictors will eat poisonous snakes. No, the poisons doesn't kill them. When I first moved where I live now I saw a large black racer around from time to time. I never saw any other snakes. One day I went out & my neighbor called me over to see the large snake he had killed. It was the black racer. We have had several snakes including copperheads around in the time since then. I haven't "seen" any this year. Of course that doesn't mean they aren't around. It does give me incentive to keep the grass cut short.

That's one nice thing about Michigan. We have very few poisonous snakes. All the snakes around here are "good" snakes. We give them a wide berth so as not to disturb them. They're our friends as they eat bugs and rodents.

I've been in Kentucky for the last 65 days straight with my full time job. It's a stunningly beautiful State with the friendliest people you can imagine. Even so, I miss Michigan, and my wife, and my dog, and my buddies, etc... I go home on Friday. Can't wait!

One bad thing about Michigan... If you're outside at sunset the swarms of mosquitos make you wish you were in Kentucky and only had to deal with a copperhead or two! :)

Interesting.. I wouldn't have guessed that.. I just thought maybe they were natural enemies, so they avoided each other by staying out of each others territory..

I'm surprised the poison doesn't kill them.. If it can kill us in a heartbeat, I would think it would be lethal to them as well.

Anyway, thanks for the info.. I hate snakes myself, so I avoid them and have no desire to be around them.. I can't even tell you which ones are non poisonous.

There are no mosquitoes in Kentucky?

I was raised in Wisconsin. Never heard of a copperhead there. I was still young and dumb. Took a job in West Virginia. Was working on a power line high up with a country road below me. I seen a large snake and since I didn't see rattlers on it, I swatted it with a tool, picked it up to sling it off. There was a big country kid walking on the road below. I slung it down in front of him maybe seven or ten yards. He looked at the snake and yelled up to me, "Dang! Thats the biggest Copperhead I ever seen!"

Hi,

Isn't that entire part of the country pretty well infested with mosquitoes? I have a friend who grew up in MN and she tells a story about a backpacking trip where she overheard two small mosquitoes talking. They were discussing whether to carry her off or just eat her there before the big ones could steal her.

Not sure, but I think reciting a version of that story from memory's on the high school exit exams there...

Wisconsin was the worst place for mosquito`s. Here in SW Utah I seldom see one. Also with the high humidity in summer 85 degrees seemed more miserable than a 100 degrees in the west. Every area has it`s bad and good points. We just got back from Mesquite Nevada for the day. Was 109 degrees there. Not many people outside. All in the casino`s eating good and cheap but paying for it at the machines and tables.

Yes I am going to be THAT guy

.... we have no poisonous snakes at all in Michigan. . We do have one venomous snake that is shy and reclusive and not a problem at all.

You are correct on the mosquitoes though. Hate those little bastards.
