Barrel Change

I am overall not happy with my Sr barrel and was considering a Wilson barrel and bushing.

I know the question will be asked...the chamber is to shallow and the crown is very rough. Overall the barrel seems average at best.

Has anyone installed the Wilson in a Sr?.

Yeah, but how's it shoot...the real question? Also not sure what you mean by the chamber's too shallow...if it feeds 230 gr FMJ and 200gr TWC's it's good to go. And before I'd go to an after market barrel/bushing, I'd give Ruger a chance to make it right.

That said, I've had good luck with 3 Wilson barrels and bushings in several Colts. I had a very good, 1911, gunsmith install them too. Neither of my Rugers needed any tweaking, however. Each will keep a magazine of selected factory ammunition or hand loads under two inches at 25 yds from a rest. 'Bout as good as I can do with old age eyes and iron sights.

When I feed certain hollow points the bullet is contacting the lands of the rifling and I see sign on the primer of high pressure. Even if Ruger makes it right its still a Ruger barrel, which is always the weak link in their autos. I have no desire to send it back for another factory barrel. The quality of the gun as a whole warrants a much better barrel than it came with.

Oh and Rugers response was "put about 300 fmj through it and then try the hollow points.". WTF.
Really so the barrel will wear that much in 300 rounds.....I doubt it LOL

You won't like this reply, but I think it makes financial sense, as well as gun sense.

Sell it/trade it, and get a gun that doesn't have the issues you don't like.

By the time you spend several hundred (or more) on the barrel and gun smithing ... And still maybe end up with problems, just buy a Springfield Loaded or Range Officer or other 'next price point 1911', and be done with it.

You could probably sell it here for $550-575 in 10 minutes. Add another $250 and have a far better 1911. Any gun that I have that needs a new barrel is gone ... No matter the brand.

Yeah I am leaning that way. My local gun shop has a Springfield RO for $795 on sale. Although I would rather have the loaded. I just need to keep saving for the stainless gold cup he has, but $1400 is a chunk of money.

Gold Cups MSRP is only $1200 .... You should easily be able to get one for $1100. That's a great price on the RO. The Loadeds shouldn't be much more than the RO depending on which one you're interested in.

Since the barrels in the several SR1911s I own are O.K. then maybe send it back to Ruger, or sell it and buy another Ruger, or sell it and buy a Wilson.

Yeah I wouldn't choose the sr if I had to buy straight out. I got on an upgrade and I could never pay what a Wilson cost.
