Weird how a colt python 6 inch barrel has like 100-200 fps less than a 6 inch barreled S&W. They didn't use any Rugers.

Never had any resources to do any of these tests myself, but having read results of several of them it seems that each barrel is a rule unto itself. Recall one where identical revolvers, same model (they were Smith's, same dash model even), barrel length, finish, had over 100 fps difference. the one with the larger barrel cylinder gap, had the higher velocity no less.

Just say'n, kinda funny.

Several years ago (well, OK, maybe the late 70s) a gun magazine did a test with a Ruger Blackhawk. They started out with a 10 1/2" barrsl (if I recall correctly) and chronographed several loads. Then they cut the barrel back, re-crowned it and tested the same loads again. Did this until is was almost back to the frame.

I was a novice back then and did not appreciate the data and do not even recall which magazine did it.

Shooting Times, Guns, American Handgunner and Guns & Ammo were what I was reading mostly back then.

Anyone remember?

It was a magazine called .44 MAG in 1978.Lee Jurras cut down a 10" 44 magnum SBH all the way to 2" It is a real neat article and I have even had him write about it on another gun forum. He stated that the 2" cutting beat his hand to a pulp He also pointed out there was less than 100 fps velocity gain from 7" to 10" ! Hope this helps.

That 'cut-barrel' test was also done in an old Shooting Times, and Guns & Ammo.

Again, unless one tests the actual gun, one guesses. No exceptions.
