My wife and I managed to get a few days off. Reservations were made at Myrtle beach weeks before the storm hit. We kept up to date on damage and were contacted by the resort 2 days before our check in. "we have little damage and your vacation is fine" we were told.
We left thinking all is well. 6 miles from our resort, we got rear ended. Other drivers fault, he said so to police. Afterwards I thanked him for not leaving the scene and told him to "have a blessed day".
We continued to our resort where we were informed "our room" had been damaged..........
While wife and resort went round and round I did some recon with resort employees and other guest.
Turns out that indeed there was some damage, but there was also a very large "party of guest" that required extra rooms. Top shelf folks. I was unable to find any other guest that was turned away.
Resort offered us a very small "pet friendly" room in another building. We looked at it, 1/3 the size of our normal room, no ocean front, not even a view and smelled of dog, for the same price. No way, we paid for a very nice room that was discounted by them. I ain't a punk and won't take that.
We offered to pay for an upgrade, none available. During my recon, one of the employees told me we got bumped, because we were not top shelf clients.
We demanded a full refund and got it. We drove 400 miles in good faith to be downgraded to a room that was not fit for the $ we paid. Now we did get our original room at a great discount offered by the resort, I got to add that.
Wife's trunk was pushed in by a full size truck so the trunk lid will not open. Thankfully the back seats can drop so we can get our stuff out.
We decided to go home. We only made it 1/3 of the way as we were both miserable from accident impact. We spent the night and returned today the last 250 miles, taking turns driving.
We have been to this resort 4-5 times a year for the last 3 years.
BREAKERS RESORT is the place we like, they done us dirty. A phone call or email and we would not have made the trip.
Really ticks me off. I will be writing them a letter. I'm forgiving man but this was to much. We love that place and are considering never ever using them again, for the dishonest practice.

My guess is that the "very large party" was some group of emergency workers like imported electric utility line crews, tree crews, insurance claim teams, etc.

I worked in the storm center for a large electric utility for many years, and one of the first things we did when it became apparent that we would have to bring in a lot of outside help was to send people out to secure large blocks of hotel room keys which we would distribute to avoid workers having to stand in long hotel registration lines. Sometime we would have to go outside the immediate area to find lodging. The guys would work long, hard days and nights as long as they knew they had a good bed and regular meals available.

The hotel should have communicated better with you, though.

Yes there were many working class fellers, I don't hold anything thing agin them. But the resort, that is a different story after they let us know everything was a go.
During my recon I talked to a dozen or more fellers doing their jobs, as I fit in, I am one of them. Those folks are working around the clock to get these places repaired, God bless them. Salt of the earth them folk.

No the large group were not working class folks, I reckon y'all can tell the difference. Group were all dressed in bathing suits with jewelry and accents not common to the south.
