At coffee this morning..............

I was having coffee this morning with a friend of mine, as usual on Fridays, when I noticed a young man busily working with a notebook and pencil. The notebook was a bound volume, and he would work then erase a little and work more studiously.

Well, I had to find out what he was doing, so I asked him. He told me he was drawing pictures, sort of brain therapy. He did something he was not good at to work his brain in sort of mental gymnastics.

Anyway, he was considering the purchase of an M-1911, and asked me if all M-1911s were 9mm. Well, gave him a brief run-down on the M-1911 story, told him of the .45 ACP. He was considering one from Springfield Armory. Then asked me about the .44 Magnum, if it was a "bear stopper" or not. Told him it was at best a "bear slower" barring any miraculous shot.

Well by then we had finished our coffee and visiting so I told everyone there I was leaving and left.

I read a post complete with a lot of pictures once that was written by a fellow that stopped a charging Brown Bear with a handgun. IIRC he used a Ruger Alaskan chambered for .454 Casull. He said he didn't aim or do anything other than pull his revolver point & start shooting as fast as he could. Said when he fired the 3rd shot the bear started tumbling & he started running to get out of the way. He was scared it would fall on him. I sincerely hope I am never in that circumstance. This happened I think about 8 years ago but I could be off some on the timeline.

If one digs they can find where they have been killed with a 9mm, 10mm & even a .410 shotgun. I guess it just wasn't Gods time for those folks to leave us.

During my time at Ft.Wainwright Alaska , I trained in a number of native villages they were Alaska National Guard
they told me how they would hunt Polar bear with what ever they had , mostly 30-30 because the ammo cost less
They would follow the Bear for as long as they had to till they could take the head shot and it was usually close .
A long the way they would also hunt seals , not with a gun that cost too much , they would use a harpon at a air hole in the ice , I have a healthy respect for them , its a hard life

Perhaps it was shot down with a real gun and then the .25 was used to administer the coup de grace.

Even that is questionable, but maybe a few rounds into his ear . . .

I know everybody starts somewhere. But the questions seem oddly basic, and very easily answered on line.

To ask if all 1911's are 9mm? If anything it takes some digging bfore you find they are available in 9mm at all.

.44 magnum is widely considered the lowest bear caliber.

The questions just seem odd. Maybe its just me.

Why, a 25 is plenty good nuff. All you need is nerves of steel and be steady as a rock. One shot in each eye, another up through the roof of the mouth and finish him off with one up each nostril. That don't work maybe another in each ear. Every Eskimo girl was taught that!

He was drawing cartoon characters, copying them from video images. As he said, he was not good at it. Doing a difficult task was the point.

the reality is most people don't have a clue about guns and what they think they know they got from T.V. and movies.... just like in my post about the book I was reading where the P.I. is hiding from the bad guy and silently flips the safety off on her Glock.

I suppose if the you put that 25 up to the bear's head and fired about 6 rounds it probably would kill it.

Of course Bella Twin was a skilled outdoors person & did not choose the circumstance she just did the best she could in a bad situation with what was available.

Bob Wright good on you for talking to the young man. He may be ignorant now but if enough folks take the time to talk to him & encourage him to learn he may be helping someone else one day.

Laugh if you want, but....There has been a lot of study into this idea of doing complex thinking to strengthen the brain; it is thought to stave off Alzheimer’s syndrome The idea of artwork to stimulate his thinking capacity isn’t out of the ordinary. I’m sure you’ve heard of or have seen “adult coloring books....”

And as far as the question of the caliber for 1911’s....who’s to say? I had one 1911; otherwise I wouldn’t have know what caliber they are.

I would love a 9mm 1911, heck, even and especially a 38 Super in a 1911 platform.... BUT! I’m not a fan of 45 acp... Which is a topic for a different thread...

Bob, we had a strange event in church this morning. My wife later told me about it but I seen none of it. Just before church started when people were mingling I was sitting about two rows from the front. Wife was in back socializing. A large person came in and the girls there wondered what gender they were. The person looked like a woman yet had a sparse mustach and even a small goatee. She (?) wanted prayer, and asked if witchs were welcome there! Understand she (?) had a very skinny dog with her and one woman remarked she should feed it as it looked like it was starving! One woman asked what gender she/he was! I understand they did pray for her. One of the women told her something about what the bible had to say about witch s and the person got up and left. Wife came back to me and whispered about it all but I am hard hearing and with all others still talking before service I could only get the gist of it all but didn't like what I heard and now was wishing I hadn't left my gun in the truck. Evidently my wife told the girls something and another woman mentioned she knew of two other guys were no doubt packing. It`s a small church, maybe 55 people counting kids on the average Sunday. While I usually leave my gun locked in our truck I am starting to rethink that in view of all the recent school shootings and some church shootings. Been reading it here and on other sites and have been sort of silently poo pooing the need to pack in church but this time it kind of shook my tree in regards to that. I did get up and go out and check the area. It aint the world I grew up in.
