I am a newbie to the AR fraternity and recently purchased an AR 556. My question relates to installing a Harris Bipod.
What type of adapter do I need to mount a bipod in the hole below the front sight/gas block? It looks like some type of detent swivel stud is needed.
Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks for the help.
That hole is for a quick detach swivel.
For bipod mounting, you can see about finding one that connects to the bayonet lug.
Alternately, like I did, you can buy a short strip of picatinny rail and attach it to the lower part of the handguard. The bipod will then connect to it. I bought Magpul.

Aqualung,
Thanks for the post. Actually, today I went to a LGS and bought a Magpul forearm, a Magpul picatinny rail strip ( a little longer than the one you installed), and a Midwest Industries Rail Mount Sling Adapter with Standard Sling Swivel Stud.
When I got home and removed the original handguard, I tried the picatinny rail on it, by doing a little work with a dremel tool to lengthen one of the holes on the handguard, I was able to mount the rail on the original handguard like you did. Then I installed the sling adaptor and harris bipod and it works perfectly. Rock solid.
Now I can take the Magpul forearm back and save myself $30.00.
Again, thank you for your post. It is appreciated.
