Anyone watch "Blackish" last night?

I like the comedy show "Blackish", which used humor to address some things that the politically correct don't like to talk about. I guess because the main characters are a black family the show can get away with much more than if the characters were white. Last night's episode was about buying a gun for the home. While it was done for comedy, it touched on some real world issues not normally discussed on network TV. The children in the family assumed that Dad already had a gun, and when they found out he didn't, one said "Doesn't Dad love us?". The wife was adamantly against it, saying how "dangerous" it was to have a gun in the house (interestingly the character is a physician in this show). The husband states that he is a man and that a man's responsibility is to protect his family. He does in fact buy a gun, but has not even taken it out of the box (let alone loaded it) when they think they are suffering a home intrusion. And while it turns out just to be the live-in father of the Dad, the wife does, at one point, yell at her husband to "get the gun", making a good point that ultimately it is the family itself that has to provide its own protection, not just a 911 phonecall. Another part of the show that I liked was how the issue arises in the first place, where a neighbor who is overprotective of her own child questions the show's family about different things which might impact her child's safety. When this neighbor believes that there is a gun in the house she grabs her child and leaves. This neighbor, with her irrational fear of a gun is nicely made out to be a sort of buffoon rather than a responsible and rational person.

Overall I was pleased as to how this was handled. Rather than the typical Hollywood approach to guns, that they are bad, dangerous and that anyone who would keep one in the home is a Neanderthal at best or a monster at worst, they treat the issue with humor and common sense.

After watching this episode I think I will become a regular watcher of "Blackish".

It does sound like they did a good job with the gun situation, though.

I would say you don't understand the concept of the show if the name offends you

I am a casual watcher of the show and watch when I happen upon it. I too saw the show last night and was pleasantly surprised at how it played out as well.

The local TV station here is extremely anti gun. They runs ads frequently suggesting that parents ask about "dangerous situations" and specifically firearms in the homes of other children their kids might visit.
