Anybody do a 460 Rowland conversion on their 1911?

I'm thinking a 1911 that can throw down like a 44 mag would be an awesome blaster. The cool thing is you can still shoot ACP for those lightweight days.

Had a friend years ago, who carried a .460 Roland (Springfield Range Officer conversion). He liked the round but wasn't impressed with the RO, probably because he preferred Wilson Combat 1911s.

No, but I shoot one on a Springfield Armory XD-M. Turns your semi automatic into a 44 mag equivalent. You need a much heavier magazine spring which makes the magazines really hard to load. Mine has a locktited compensator on it and a different recoil spring, so it’s not an easy switch back and forth between 460 Rowland and 45 acp.

I have one on a Rock Island frame, and it is a hoot. Not sure what the conversion costs now, but it is likely the cheapest way to get this kind of power in a 1911 platform. I am set up to reload .460 ammo, so it saves a little bit on the cost of shooting. My son quoted that the gun was "ridiculous, but necessary!"

I think the brake is the trick in making these work. When I built my 357sig I added a panzer brake on the end of the 9" barrel. Between the weight on the end of the barrel and recoil reduction I could barely get it to cycle"Do Not Exceed " loads. I eventually lost the brake and cut the barrel back to 7" and it functions with everything. I'll probably get back around to it in the next year or two if I get some money to blow and don't build a Colt Walker Rifle for something entirely different. My 357sig is pretty badass ringing steel out to 200yds with Lehigh's going 2,300fps.

I'm still debating the platform for my 460 Rowland build. Availability of custom parts is the main issue. Cheapest and Easiest would be a Frankenglock like my 357sig that I could do for a few hundred dollars. Plenty of inexpensive 45 frames and slides on the market as well as readily available 9" gunsmith barrel blanks. Add a Panzer brake and ream the chamber and it's pretty much done. A 7-8" 2011with optic and rail would be the ultimate setup but would definitely be a few grand. Keeping my hobbies as cheap as possible allows me to have more hobbies!!!
