A zillion years ago (or the mid-1950s) the TV show Sgt. Preston of the Mounties was sponsored by Quaker, maker of Puffed Wheat, Puffed Rice, and Good Hot Ralston, the first two cereals "Shot From Guns".

Sgt. Preston and his wonder dog Yukon King always got their man, each show ending with the good Sgt. ruffling King's fur and saying, "Well, King, thanks to you this case is closed" . . . or words very close to those. Anyway . . .

The Quaker company ran a promotional thingy wherein you could mail in some boxtops and receive a GEN-YOU-WINE deed to one square inch of land in the Yukon. I of course sent the necessary things in and, in due course, received my promised deed. It was fancy, and I framed it and hung it on the wall in my bedroom.

As with many things from my childhood, this disappeared at some point . . . more's the pity.

Does anybody else remember this? Does anybody still have such a deed?

:)

PS Noticed a couple of these on ebay.

I listened on radio, but we didn't have a tv. Don't remember the land deed. Wish I owned some.

HHH

I remember the "square inch ad" but didn't order the certificate as the land was to small for me to homestead.

I remember writing the Mounted Police and was disappointed to find out that a kid from Memphis could not be Mountie...seemed awfully unfair to me.

I had a square inch of land in the Yukon, wish I could find the ownership certificate, it's probably smack in the middle of the most productive gold mine in history.
I also once won a square foot of land in Mexico. All I had to do was contact their lawyer and he would handle all the paperwork for me. For a small fee of course.

If you're lucky it may be under the 19th hole.

I remember the show and the promo very well. Never tried to get my deed because even at 10 or 11, I couldn't see any value to a square inch of the Yukon. I wish I retained that level of frugal discretion through the rest of my life. I'd have way more Rugers.

Then again... when my uncle died one of my cousins put his "Garfield Goose Secret Service" identification card on e-bay and made over $1000 on it. Garfield Goose was apparently a cartoon show where a goose believed himself to be king of the United States.

Reading this post reminded me of the old Superman series that they're running on tv right now. At the start of the show they describe him as a "Strange visitor from another planet". Nowdays of course they would simply call him an undocumented immigrant.

Hi,

I remember watching Sgt. Preston. Also recall a "one square inch somewhere" land deed ad, but I thought it was something in the classifieds that filled the back pages of magazines like Popular Science. Don't remember the Quaker promotion.

There was another fun deal, perhaps in the '70s, where one could get an otherwise unnamed star named after them... anybody take advantage of that one? ;)

OK Guys,
Lets get the facts correct here. Nothing but the facts Ma'am.

It was Sergeant Preston of the Yukon in November 1951, and remained under that name through the end of the series and into television. And It was Mush you Huskies.

I've actually been listening to the "Challenge of the Yukon" radio shows on line lately. I'm up to the 356th episode (there are 609 of them). Ran from 1938 - 1955.

You can find it here. (plus a lot of other old radio shows).

About episode 190 they went from a 15 minutes radio show to a 1/2 hour format and the Quaker sponsorship started. They had all kinds of promotions like dog breed trading cards, a signaling flashlight, a model farm and etc.

Hi,

Still is!

Quick thread drift: the Iditarod started today for all you musher fans. I just heard about it on the radio, but I know a friend will be glued to the race. She became interested when her late husband's cousin lived up in AK and they'd go up to visit once the snow started melting!

Back on topic, I'll have to ask if she was ever a Sgt. Preston fan... ;)

When I was a kid I got a sort of underground comic book. I remember it had a how to do article that showed how to make knuckles out of Milk can handles and believe it or not, towards the front it had a ad to buy deactivated Thompson sub machine guns with the barrels plugged and towards the back of the comic was another ad for new barrels for your Thompson!
Remember those ad`s for xray glass`s that showed a woman walking by that led you to believe you could see through her dress?
A side story here, there used to be a ad for belltone hearing aids in magazines like popular mechanics and the national geographic. It showed a little girl and it said, I have a secret! For whatever reason I remembered that ad. Then I got married and the first time I met my father in law who was a audiologist pulled out that ad and said, that`s your wife when she was a kid! I instantly remembered the ad! He had used that ad in his business as he used to sell belltone hearing aids.

Fifty years ago I hired into Universal Movie studios as a guard. Later I learned my boss was MR. KEEN, TRACER OF LOST PERSONS. I vaguely recalled that radio show when I heard that. There were a number of old actors and wannabe`s on that job and I guess it kept them eating and hoping to get noticed in between stints. It was a interesting job.

One of the biggest disappoints of my life was when I had occasion to visit British Columbia, I saw many police officers and police vehicles but (I thought) no Royal Canadian Mounted Police. I asked the guy that I was traveling with where are all the RCMP? and his reply was that we have probably passed over a hundred of them this week, when and where I asked, I haven't seen any, he then told me that they patrolled the highways and other areas, I said, all the police officer's I've seen were in regular uniforms, that's what they wear he said---but--but I thought they wore the Red Tunics, only in dress or ceremonial events he told me.
Ruined my whole trip, I figured that maybe Sgt. Preston had added a snowmobile to his modes of transportation but surely there was a dog sled, a horse and King's kennel in the garage at his house.
It still bums me out when I think of it.
