Always seemed like such a personable guy. Just watched him and Eva Marie Saint in "36 Hours".

I had a chance to meet Mr. Garner briefly back in the 1970s. He was fairly active in off-roading for a period. He was a gracious and wonderfully approachable guy. Just one of the boys.

Truly a great actor and a good man.

Sad news...
Truly a fine actor and by most accounts a lot more "real" than most celebrities.
He made some of my favorite westerns...Duel at Diablo, Hour of the Gun, Support Your Local Gunfighter/Sheriff.
He was great in Maverick, Nichols and The Rockford Files.

Always played the reluctant hero. Roles in "Support Your Local Sherrif" and the scrounger in "The Great Escape" immediately come to mind. And, of course, I grew up watching "Maverick."

I grew up watching reruns of The Rockford Files. When I worked 2nd shift years ago I used to watch reruns of Maverick at 4 a.m. I actually just watched a couple of episodes of Maverick last night. I enjoyed everything I ever saw him in.

One of my kids got me his autobiography for Christmas, knowing how much I like him. (The Garner Files-a memoir) He was a man's man. He never wavered in his beliefs, and constantly stood up to those he felt were bullies, even at the risk of his career. He was the real deal, and I'll miss his work.

James Garner, thanks for making my life just a bit more enjoyable at times. May you rest in peace...

RIP James. We had a rather heated discussion on his Firebird in another thread with a surprising amount of posts. But when I heard about his passing on the radio they mentioned a couple movies and his role as Maverick. Not even a hint about "The Rockford Files".

That really surprised me. I thought "The Rockford Files" along with "Maverick" were some of his best accomplishments. We'll miss you Jimbo.

The Rockford files was a good show in it's day,

Hi,

Rockford was on TV when I was living in LA's South Bay, and several of us were active bicyclists. A favorite ride was from the Redondo Beach area up to Malibu, with a turnaround at the Malibu Pier. That's where they did some of the filming for the show, with the set of Rockford's little trailer out on the beach and such. If they were filming at the time we got there, we'd stop and watch for a while. Never met Mr. Garner, but in a strange way, feel like he was once an acquaintance.

In his 2011 memoir, "The Garner Files," he provided some amusing and enlightening clues, including his penchant for bluntly expressed opinions and a practice for decking people who said something nasty to his face -- including an obnoxious fan and an abusive stepmother.

My kind a guy......

And when he suspected his studio of cheating him on residual payments -- a not-unheard-of condition in Hollywood -- Garner spoke out loudly and fought back with lawsuits. They all deserved it, Garner declared in his book.

Go figure,...Hollywood screwing people out of their contractual payments... Who'd of guessed?


I liked him as the "scrounger" in The Great Escape".
