Nice early XR3 RSS9W that will soon head to Alan Harton for some welding and CCH. Kind of a neat project as far as the custom work done to the top strap. Not sure why the owner felt he needed a scope mounted on the top but to each their own. I'll have it freshened up and make a shooter out of it. Should make a fine gun when finished. I'll post some additional pictures when it gets back.

Gary, I like your project..............long ago, I purchased a nicely engraved Single Six that had the top strap so modified. MARTIN was stamped on the front of the cylinder, dunno if owner or chiseler.........came in a factory RSSE box with factory stags. The box went to Brother Hamm and grips to another real RSSE..........The gun? It's a shooter for sure. Like you, I have no clue as to why holes would be tapped in the topstrap of the gun you have.....I HATE HOLES.

those holes were very useful and helped many "old guys" who had bad eyes , and made some of our gunshops a few dollars to boot 8) kept the customers happy, nothing else available to use back then to mount a scope

today those holes devalue ANY "collectible" by at least $125 to $250 a hole !!!

( and once they are repaired, no matter HOW good or WHO does it, the gun is NO LONGER "original"

Nice project gun Gary, it should look great when it s done.....................

Alan has done several of those jobs for me and the subtle CCH he gets from his local guys is perfect for blending in the welds without being garrish. Have him do some sort of sight system and have fun with it!

Thinking about a 7 1/2" barrel.

I think Flatgate would approve!

Absolutely. That's exactly where the thought came from. I remember seeing his gun and always thought it was really nice. Also have another project coming up. Dale Dalbotten always wanted a to make a .357 Flattop with a 7 1/2" barrel. So that one is next. I even have the Maximum barrel he was going to use. Just waiting for the right donor Flattop frame.
