An animal rescue last night

Miss Penny & I were on our way home last night, and I spotted something in the middle of the road. I missed it, and turned around to check it out. Well, I was right in my first thoughts as to what I'd seen. I gently picked it up in a towel, and took it home. Miss Penny held it as I drove the 3 miles.
Well upon getting home I put it in a cage to see how it would act, and to see if I could evaluate any injuries.
It didn't appear to have any injuries,, and Miss Penny took a quick pic of it before it flew off. A neat screech owl that was kind enough to allow us to enjoy it for a short while. And we most likely kept it from getting run over in the road.

I see more owls killed along the road than any other raptor. Is that cuz of the "blinded by the headlights" problem, or do they get so wrapped up in their job they forget to pay attention to the rest of the world for those few critical seconds?

Bravo! A lot of people would not have stopped. And some sickos would have deliberately run over the little owl. You did the right thing.

Sorry for the blurry pic. Miss Penny was trying to hurry, as I was not restricting the owl. Plus, it was about 10 pm. It's the second time we've been together & found a screech owl in the road & rescued it. The first one did have a busted wing. It went to a nature center & became a "crowd favorite" due to it's gentle nature.
It is a bit amazing this one didn't get hit, as it was on the main road in Lake Lure on a sat. night.
I had placed a towel over it, and gently wrapped it up, picked it up, and let Miss Penny hold it while I drove home. At first, it's head was uncovered, but she decided to cover it's head to calm it some. It didn't struggle much, and when we got home, she put it in the cage, and we saw immediately that the wings seemed ok. So, she went & got her camera, and I took it out of the cage. It sat on my hand for a little bit & then flew off into one of our big oak trees here.
Miss Penny loves owls. I once took her to Marathon Fl & to where some burrowing owls had a ground nest. She spent about 3 hrs there laying close by, and getting some great pics of the birds. (That was back before digital cameras & we spent a lot on film that day.) One of her favorites is a pic of a juvie burrowing owl tugging at her beach towel as she was laying there.

All in all, we always care about any animals we deal with. Even in my job,,,!

Well I can keep throwing them out....BUT I would have done the same thing...hate to see injured animals on the road....we wouldn't expect any thing less form the "critter gitter"....RR.

I stopped to run interference for a (much larger) owl a while back. Stopped in the road in front of it to put a buffer between oncoming traffic and the owl. It eventually flew off. I felt good.

Two nights later, on the way home, one flew into my truck and died. I felt bad.

Be careful, my Dad once rescued a hawk with six buckshot in his wing and torso. Unfortunately sometime during the recovery it bonded to Dad and followed him around like a flying dog but would never share the rabbits it caught.

Oh, Miss Penny would LOVE it if we had a resident owl she could see often. She has commented a lot in the last few days she wants a "pet" owl. (Not a real pet,, but one who hangs around for her to photograph & talk to. She knows better than to think she should try & keep one.)

Here in the river bottom of the upper Grand River in N.E. Oh we often hear as many as 3-4 Barred Owls at a time when I get home at mid-night. Also hear Great Horned Owls too. Ya'll got me curious so I went to the DNR website and they had owl sounds/calls available to play, cool. stevemb

I like owls too. Found one in the road a couple years ago and transferred it to some brush in an isolated spot. Hope it made it. We get owls talkin up a storm around here. Sometimes they let out a sound that could come from a grave, seeds chills up my back!
