Hope no one here was on that train OR on I-5. What a mess! My wife has ridden a train, between Seattle and Portland, and said that you are really moving. Don't know that this is the same route or not.

Saw pictures on the tube. 80 MPH looked a way to fast for that curve!

I live 25 miles from there.
It seems someone saw this coming.

I live in Dupont, WA. The accident scene is less than a mile over the hill from my home (but about 3 miles to drive around to it). I was already at work when it happened, but it was south of my route anyway. We are all safe.

This IS a major transportation problem. I live about 20 miles from the accident site and there is no way that the local/side access roads, county, and state roads around the accident site can handle the amount of north/south I-5 traffic, especially the truck traffic. Most of these roads are old, obsolete, 2 lane roads -- that is 1 lane in each direction.
For the last year AMTRACK has been upgrading the track and roadbed and running test trains. Saw one last week. This new route was done to not only save time, but to add two more trains per day as well as avoid the old route around the Puget Sound, which is subject to landslide closures and a old tunnel bottleneck.

I imagine more than a few truckers will take I-90 east than take one of a few routes south to I-84 and back to Portland. Heckuva detour! Prayers for the dead and injured.....

I have been wondering if that 30 MPH wasn't set when the trains using the track were freight trains and that the AMTRAK, which had run the route before, wasn't supposed to heed that limit, but instead was supposed to be traveling at 80?Ale-8(1) said:

This was NOT a new bridge. Just the track bed to and from the bridge. I have driven under that bridge many, many times over the years. Just sayin’....
