Not in the same category, but back in 1971 at Camp Eagle, Republic of Vietnam, the Commanding General had his private helipad painted with the crest of our division, the 101st Airborne, about 15 by 20 feet in size. It was very impressive, and intended to be used for the upcoming visit by Bob Hope with his Christmas show. But before Hope came, one of our helicopters from my unit, the 326th Medical Battalion, was on their way to our unit when a major mechanical problem affected the aircraft and the pilot had to make an emergency landing. The only decent spot he saw was the General's landing pad. He hit hard, blowing out the skids, and rupturing the gas tank, spilling aviation fuel all over the nicely painted crest, of course ruining it. No one was hurt but the General was livid. He called my battalion commander, LTC Bob Day, to his office and apparently ripped him up and down for what the pilot had done, seemingly far more concerned over impressing Bob Hope than in the well being of the crew of the helicopter. That general was a total POS in my opinion.
