Yesterday I ran into a problem with my ADT security system. With the oven in the kitchen performing its self cleaning cycle, the smoke detectors were set off. I was able to silence the alarm and reset the system, or so I thought, but the glass breaking sensors would not reset. When I called ADT they suggested I use their AI Chat assistant, which I agreed to do. I was able to have a full, and detailed conversation with this AI system, which responded in a manner that one would expect from a trained, helpful and clearing speaking live human being. She talked me through several steps and finally had me disconnect the power to the security system, disconnect the backup battery and then reset the entire system successfully. My part of the conversation often involved a several sentence long statement which the AI bot had no trouble understanding and responding to. I was pretty blown away by the way this all happened, an experience far superior to similar systems with companies only a few months back.
Adding to this was a segment on 60 Minutes showing the humanoid robots being developed for use at a Hyundia auto plant here in the U.S. The robots of science fiction are almost here, and likely will be here interacting with us, talking with us, and who knows what else in the very near future. I am glad that I am already retired.
